Where things stand

  1. UN Climate Loss and Damage Fund Earmarks Inaugural $20 Million Payout to Nepal

Key point: The UN's Loss and Damage Fund has made its first-ever financial commitment by earmarking $20 million to help Nepal recover from catastrophic August floods.

The United Nations' Fund for Responding to Loss and Damage has agreed to set aside $20 million to assist Nepal following devastating floods in August. The decision, made during an extraordinary virtual board meeting on Thursday, marks the first time the fund has allocated money to a specific country since its creation.

Nepal requested the funds after climate-driven floods and landslides killed over 1,400 people and caused billions of dollars in damages. While the $20 million allocation represents the maximum amount a country can request in a single application, it covers only a fraction of Nepal's estimated recovery costs. The country must now submit a formal proposal detailing how the money will be used before the funds are disbursed.
