NFL Welcomes Union Investigation Into Eagles' Handling of Jalen Hurts' Blood Clots
Key point: NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell stated the league welcomes the players' union's investigation into the Eagles' medical care of Jalen Hurts, while maintaining that proper protocols were followed.
NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell announced Wednesday that the league welcomes an investigation into the Philadelphia Eagles' medical handling of quarterback Jalen Hurts. Responding to a request from the NFL Players Association, Goodell stated that the union has a right to call for a review, though he maintained that the team's medical protocols were properly followed.
The NFLPA demanded the inquiry after Hurts was permitted to play a game in London and fly back to the United States despite an ultrasound revealing a blood clot in his calf. A subsequent examination showed the clot had traveled to his lungs, a condition known as bilateral pulmonary emboli, which has ruled him out for the remainder of the season.
The league's chief medical officer, Dr. Allen Sills, previously defended the Eagles' medical staff, and reports indicated the NFL did not plan to discipline the franchise. Hurts is currently barred from all football activities while undergoing treatment with blood thinners.
