The Minimalism Tax: How Flat Design Increases Cognitive Load

Tech giants championed flat design as a cleaner, more efficient interface standard. But a decade of usability research shows that stripping away visual depth actually forces the human brain to work harder.

Apple and Google spent the better part of the 2010s arguing that flat design was the inevitable, sophisticated future of digital interfaces. The pitch was seductive: users were now digitally literate enough that they no longer needed digital buttons to look like physical plastic, and stripping away those childish drop shadows, leather textures, and bevels would result in a cleaner, faster, more efficient experience.
