NWSL Shatters Milestones as Ashley Sanchez Ties Scoring Record and Washington Spirit Eclipse 200,000 Fans

North Carolina Courage forward Ashley Sanchez netted her 20th goal to tie the league's single-season scoring record, capping a historic weekend that also saw the Washington Spirit break the 200,000 single-season attendance barrier.

The National Women's Soccer League just delivered a weekend that rewrote the history books on both sides of the touchline. On the pitch, North Carolina Courage forward Ashley Sanchez buried a 37th-minute penalty kick to tie the all-time single-season scoring record with her 20th goal. In the stands, the Washington Spirit rolled out a literal pink carpet at Audi Field to welcome their 200,000th fan of the year—shattering a barrier that seemed unthinkable just a half-decade ago.[3][5]

Sanchez's milestone arrived during a gritty 2-1 road loss to the Utah Royals on September 27. Stepping up to the spot, the 27-year-old calmly converted to match the 20-goal benchmark set by Temwa Chawinga in 2024. The achievement caps a staggering tactical reinvention.

After a turbulent 2023 that saw her play zero minutes at the World Cup followed by an unexpected trade from Washington, Sanchez found a new gear in North Carolina. Courage head coach Mak Lind shifted the natural attacking midfielder out to the left wing, unlocking a direct, lethal scoring touch.[1][5]

Before this year, Sanchez had never scored more than five goals in a single NWSL campaign. "I was laughing," Sanchez recalled of a preseason conversation where Lind predicted she would hit the 20-goal mark. "He was like, 'I don't know why you're laughing. I'm being serious.'" She has since obliterated the previous American single-season record of 15—held jointly by Crystal Dunn and Alex Morgan—and boasts a league-record five multi-goal games this year. With four regular-season matches remaining, she needs just one more strike to claim the outright NWSL crown.[1][2]

Ashley Sanchez has tied the all-time NWSL single-season scoring record and shattered the previous American benchmark.

While Sanchez dismantled records on the grass, her former club was busy proving the explosive commercial viability of the women's game. On September 26, the Washington Spirit hosted a sellout crowd of 19,215 for a defensive battle against Angel City FC. Though the Spirit ultimately fell 1-0 to an 88th-minute goal, the turnout pushed their 2026 home attendance to a staggering 205,367 through 13 matches, easily eclipsing their 2025 high-water mark of 186,152.[3][7][8]

The trajectory in the nation's capital is nothing short of vertical. In 2021, the Spirit averaged just over 5,000 fans per contest. Today, they pull in 15,797 per game, surging to nearly 17,000 for weekend fixtures. To mark the occasion, the club upgraded the seats of "Fan 200k" and had him lead the stadium's "Rise Up DC" chant before kickoff.[3][7]

The Washington Spirit's average home attendance has more than tripled since the 2021 season.

Washington isn't an anomaly; they are the standard-bearers of a league-wide attendance boom. Nine of the NWSL's 16 clubs are currently averaging over 10,000 fans per game, up from seven just two years ago. Expansion franchises are pouring gasoline on the fire—the Denver Summit famously packed 63,004 fans into the NFL's Empower Field earlier this season, setting the single-match league record.[4]

The product on the field is keeping pace with the spectacle in the stands. Beyond Sanchez's scoring tear, veterans are continuing to cement their legacies. Seattle Reign substitute Brittany Ratcliffe recently notched her 13th career goal, passing Megan Rapinoe for the second-most goals scored off the bench in league history, highlighting the depth of talent across the rosters.[5][6]

Ashley Sanchez converted a 37th-minute penalty against the Utah Royals to secure her 20th goal of the season.

As the 2026 regular season sprints toward the playoffs, the stakes are crystal clear. The NWSL is no longer just surviving; it is operating at a scale and quality that demands prime-time attention. Sanchez has four weeks to find goal number 21, and the Spirit have two home matches left to pad a gate record that will force the rest of the global market to take notes.[1][3]
