Motorsport Trade Market: Hauger Joins Foyt as IndyCar's 2027 Grid Takes Shape
The 2027 motorsport grid is rapidly solidifying following a flurry of September signings, highlighted by Dennis Hauger joining AJ Foyt Racing and Mick Schumacher securing a seat at Meyer Shank Racing. Meanwhile, Esteban Ocon has confirmed his free-agent status as he prepares to exit Haas F1.

The 2027 motorsport grid isn't just taking shape—it's being aggressively locked down. September delivered a rapid-fire sequence of contract announcements that fundamentally altered the landscape in IndyCar, Formula 1, and the World Endurance Championship. Teams are moving early, securing proven commodities and high-upside rookies before the off-season even officially begins.[1][3][4][6]
In the NTT IndyCar Series, AJ Foyt Racing made the loudest statement, signing 2026 Rookie of the Year Dennis Hauger to a multi-year agreement on September 16. The 23-year-old Norwegian will take over the iconic No. 14 Chevrolet, stepping into a flagship role for the legendary team founded by seven-time champion A.J. Foyt.[1][2]
Hauger's trajectory has been steep. After dominating Indy NXT with six wins in 2025, he navigated a volatile rookie IndyCar campaign with Dale Coyne Racing. Foyt team president Larry Foyt didn't hesitate to pull the trigger on the young prospect, citing his rapid adaptability. "Dennis wants to win, and we want to win," Foyt said. "That's where everything starts."[1][2]
Meyer Shank Racing matched that aggression earlier in the month, confirming on September 4 that Mick Schumacher will pilot the No. 66 Honda in 2027. Schumacher, who spent 2026 cutting his teeth with Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, will partner with Marcus Armstrong to form a potent lineup for the Ohio-based squad.[3]
MSR co-owner Mike Shank specifically pointed to Schumacher's oval performance—a notoriously steep learning curve for European drivers—as the deciding factor. "He really impressed us in his first season of IndyCar," Shank noted. "He's also shown tremendous pace on the ovals, which is a huge hurdle for any driver coming into IndyCar without that experience."[3]
While IndyCar teams are locking in their rosters, the Formula 1 paddock remains a high-stakes waiting game. Ahead of the Azerbaijan Grand Prix on September 23, Esteban Ocon publicly confirmed his status as a free agent for 2027, signaling an impending departure from Haas F1.[4][5]
Ocon, a 30-year-old veteran with 194 Grand Prix starts and a 2021 victory in Hungary, has endured a brutal 2026 campaign, netting just three points for Haas. Yet he remains adamant about his F1 future. "At the moment I'm definitely a free agent for next year," Ocon said. "I've raced almost 200 races, which is a lot, but I'm not happy with what I've done and what I've achieved so far."[4][5]
Meanwhile, in the Hypercar ranks of the World Endurance Championship, Ferrari opted for absolute continuity. On September 17, the Italian marque announced multi-year extensions for Nicklas Nielsen and Yifei Ye, ensuring their Le Mans-winning core remains intact as the series approaches its 2027 regulation cycle.[6][7]
Nielsen, 29, has contested 110 races for Ferrari since 2018 and was instrumental in the team's 2024 overall victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. "It is an honour to continue on this path representing the Prancing Horse," Nielsen said, cementing a relationship that will now stretch beyond a decade.[6][7]
