By 00:06 UTC on October 20, Israeli police arrested 10 suspects in connection with a series of violent attacks on European diplomats and a foreign journalist in the West Bank.

The arrests represent a rare enforcement action by Israeli authorities, following mounting international pressure over violence during the 2026 olive harvest, a period of heightened friction between Palestinian farmers and Israeli settlers.

European Union officials demanded accountability after their delegation was physically threatened and their vehicles were vandalized. Historical indictment rates for such incidents remain low.

How the story developed

The recent wave of violence disrupting the annual olive harvest across the occupied territory escalated on October 17. In the West Bank village of Abu Falah, dozens of masked Israeli settlers attacked Palestinian farmers and a United States photojournalist.

During the Abu Falah assault, Washington Post photographer Heidi Levine was repeatedly kicked by attackers who stole her equipment. Levine sustained four broken vertebrae. The assault occurred amid expanding military land restrictions for Palestinians in the West Bank.

Following the attack on Levine, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's office claimed the facts were unclear.

Later on October 17, a separate attack took place in the West Bank village of Taybeh. Masked Israeli settlers armed with metal bars assaulted a diplomatic convoy visiting to observe the Palestinian olive harvest.

The convoy included diplomats from Belgium, France, and Poland. During the assault, Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of a northern French town, was beaten and thrown to the ground.

The assault in Taybeh prompted immediate condemnation from European capitals. Israeli officials condemned the violence but noted that the diplomatic visit was uncoordinated.
