Dennis Hauger Signs Multi-Year Deal With AJ Foyt Racing for 2027 IndyCar Season

The 2026 IndyCar Rookie of the Year will replace Santino Ferrucci in the No. 14 Chevrolet as Foyt looks to capitalize on its Team Penske technical alliance.

By Camila Torres

The 2027 IndyCar silly season just delivered its first genuine shockwave. On September 16, A.J. Foyt Enterprises announced that 23-year-old Dennis Hauger—the reigning 2026 NTT IndyCar Series Rookie of the Year—has signed a multi-year agreement to pilot the team's flagship No. 14 Chevrolet. The move abruptly ends Santino Ferrucci’s four-year tenure in the seat and signals a ruthless commercial and technical reset for the historic organization.[1][2]

Hauger arrives at Foyt with a tidal wave of momentum. The Norwegian driver, known in the paddock as "The Norwegian Nightmare," completed his rookie campaign with Dale Coyne Racing on a one-year deal, finishing 22nd in the championship but securing a vital Leader's Circle payout for the No. 19 entry. More importantly, he captured the Rookie of the Year honors by outscoring high-profile newcomers Mick Schumacher and Caio Collet.[3][5]

"Dennis wants to win, and we want to win," team president Larry Foyt said bluntly during the announcement. "That's where everything starts." Foyt emphasized that the signing is part of a broader structural overhaul designed to elevate the team's baseline performance. "We've spent a lot of time talking about where we want this team to go. We're investing in our people, our technical side and our commercial program because we want to continue moving forward."[2][4]

For Hauger, the promotion to a team with a direct technical alliance with Team Penske represents a massive opportunity to prove his ceiling. Prior to his 2026 IndyCar debut, Hauger dominated the 2025 INDY NXT by Firestone championship with Andretti Global, racking up six victories and eight pole positions to win the developmental title by a commanding 72 points.[1][2]

Hauger brings a proven championship pedigree from the European and American junior open-wheel ranks.

"I've learned a lot in my first two years racing in America, but I still feel like there is a lot more for me to learn and accomplish in IndyCar," Hauger said following the signing. "This team has so much history in this sport, but what intrigues me even more was hearing about the future and what they're building now."[1][5]

The immediate casualty of this rebuild is Ferrucci, whose status in the paddock is now in limbo. Ferrucci joined Foyt in 2023 and quickly became a reliable force at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, finishing in the top 10 in all eight of his Indy 500 starts since 2019, including a spectacular third-place run in 2023 where he led 11 laps.[3][5]

However, Ferrucci's road course and street circuit form consistently failed to match his oval prowess. After finishing ninth in the championship in 2024, he faded to 16th in 2025 and dropped to 17th in 2026. With rookie teammate Caio Collet managing only 24th in the standings this past season, Foyt management and primary sponsor Homes For Our Troops evidently decided a clean slate was required to maximize the engineering data flowing from Team Penske.[2][3]

AJ Foyt Racing is looking to improve its road and street course performance to match its traditional oval speed.

Hauger's European pedigree suggests he possesses the technical vocabulary to exploit that data. Before crossing the Atlantic, he was a fixture in the Red Bull Junior Team, winning the 2019 Italian Formula 4 championship and the 2021 FIA Formula 3 title before collecting five race victories in Formula 2.[1][4]

The No. 14 Chevrolet will retain its primary backing from Homes For Our Troops and the Hendricks Holding Company. Hauger’s first official duty for his new employer will take place off the track on October 2, 2026, when he represents the team at the GM Defense Valor & Velocity Gala at the GM Design Dome in Warren, Michigan.[1][2][4]

The signing leaves the 2027 IndyCar grid with just six unconfirmed full-time seats across 25 chartered entries. Ferrucci is reportedly exploring a part-time role in Foyt's No. 4 entry, though that seat has also been linked to Indy NXT graduate Josh Pierson. Meanwhile, Dale Coyne Racing must now search for a replacement to fill the void left by Hauger's departure as the winter testing window approaches.[6]
