The NCAA Volleyball Hierarchy Is Fracturing: SMU and Penn State Upend the Top 5
The mid-September AVCA rankings reveal a volatile national picture, with SMU surging to a historic No. 5 after stunning Kentucky in the Bahamas, while Nebraska holds firm at No. 1.
The non-conference gauntlet of the 2026 NCAA women's volleyball season is doing exactly what it was designed to do: break the established order before league play even begins. As the mid-September AVCA Coaches Poll dropped this week, the top of the standings reflected a landscape in flux. While the Nebraska Cornhuskers maintained an iron grip on the No. 1 spot, the rest of the top five underwent a seismic reshuffle driven by massive upsets on neutral floors and historic centennial celebrations.[1][4]
The loudest shockwave originated from Nassau, Bahamas, at the inaugural Paradise Invitational. The SMU Mustangs, previously ranked No. 8, walked onto the Grand Hyatt Baha Mar court and dismantled No. 3 Kentucky in four grueling sets (27-25, 21-25, 25-21, 27-25). The victory vaulted SMU to No. 5 in the national standings—the highest ranking in the program's history.[1][2]
The Mustangs did not just survive the Wildcats; they overpowered them at the net. Sophomore outside hitter Suli Davis delivered a staggering 25 kills and 15 digs, logging her third consecutive double-double. Middle blocker Favor Anyanwu anchored the defense with eight rejections, part of a 13-block team effort that stifled Kentucky's high-octane offense.[2][8]
"We just have some incredible opportunities," Kentucky's Morgan Gaerte noted earlier in the week regarding the grueling travel schedule. "Wrigley and the Bahamas, just so much fun." But the Wildcats found themselves hitting a season-high eight attack errors in the final frame against SMU's relentless block. The Mustangs are now 6-1, boasting an undefeated record against SEC opponents this year, including top-10 victories over Texas, Texas A&M, and Kentucky.[2][8]
While SMU was rewriting its record books in the Caribbean, Penn State was defending its legacy in Philadelphia. Playing at The Palestra to kick off the historic arena's 100th birthday celebration, the No. 12 Nittany Lions stunned No. 4 Stanford with a decisive 3-0 sweep (27-25, 25-20, 25-21).[3]
The top-12 clash featured the two winningest programs in Division I volleyball history, but Penn State dictated the tempo. Freshman outside hitter Haley Burgdorf announced her arrival on the national stage, hitting .450 with 10 kills and nine digs. The Nittany Lions held the Cardinal to a .206 hitting percentage, dropping Stanford to 4-2 on the season and sending Penn State surging upward in the national conversation.[3]
Above the fray, Nebraska remains untouchable. The Cornhuskers collected 48 of the 63 first-place votes to secure 1,560 points in the latest AVCA poll, marking their 127th all-time week at No. 1. Their dominance is anchored by a suffocating defense that currently leads the nation, holding opponents to a microscopic .085 hitting percentage.[1][4][5]
The Huskers showcased that defensive wall on Wednesday night against No. 20 Creighton. Playing in front of a program-record indoor home crowd of 15,405 fans at Pinnacle Bank Arena, Nebraska swept the Bluejays, holding them to a season-low -.033 hitting percentage. Middle blocker Manaia Ogbechie has been a revelation at the net, hitting .547 across her last three matches while leading the team with 27 blocks on the season.[4][5]
Chasing Nebraska is an undefeated Pittsburgh squad. The Panthers sit at No. 2 with a flawless 10-0 record, having collected the remaining 15 first-place votes. Right behind them at No. 3 is Louisville, a team riding an eight-match winning streak since a season-opening loss to Wisconsin. The Cardinals recently swept Western Kentucky, utilizing a season-high 11 total blocks to hold the Hilltoppers to a .063 hitting percentage.[1][6]
The standings will not have time to settle. Today, the No. 3 Cardinals travel to Memorial Coliseum in Lexington to face No. 4 Kentucky. The "Battle of the Bluegrass" marks the first time in the fierce in-state rivalry's history that both programs meet as top-five teams. With Kentucky looking to rebound from the SMU upset and Louisville aiming to extend its surge, the match will serve as the final crucible before conference play locks the standings into a grueling two-month grind.[6][8]
Further down the board, the depth of the national field continues to expand. Purdue cracked the Power 10 rankings for the first time this season, while Colorado rocketed up six spots to No. 17. The parity that defined the 2025 season has clearly spilled over into 2026, proving that no ranking is safe when the first serve goes up.[1][7]
