Texas Men and Virginia Women Unanimous No. 1 in Revamped CSCAA Preseason Swimming Poll

The stakes are set for the 2026-27 collegiate swimming season, and the targets remain firmly on the backs of two historic dynasties. The College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its Division I Preseason Top 25 National Rankings on September 17, placing the reigning national champion Texas men and Virginia women at the undisputed top of the board. Both programs secured unanimous No. 1 selections, sweeping all 10 first-place votes to max out at 250 points apiece.[1][3]

For Virginia, the unanimous nod reflects a staggering run of dominance that has reshaped the women's collegiate landscape. The Cavaliers enter the year chasing an unprecedented seventh consecutive NCAA title, having become the first program in history to win six straight during their historic 2025-26 campaign. Stanford, the 2026 NCAA runner-up, claimed the No. 2 spot with 233 points, edging out third-ranked Texas (232) by a single point.[1][2]

On the men's side, Texas opens the season at the summit following their second consecutive and 17th overall NCAA Men's Swimming and Diving Championship. The Longhorns' 250-point unanimous selection puts them clear of a tightly packed chasing group. Indiana secured No. 2 with 235 points, narrowly holding off 2026 NCAA runner-up Florida (231), while California (217) and Tennessee (209) rounded out the top five.[1][5]

But the numbers on the board only tell half the story this season. The CSCAA has fundamentally overhauled its polling methodology for 2026-27, abandoning the traditional "dual-meet" focus that previously governed the rankings. Instead, the association has transitioned to a comprehensive in-season ranking designed to evaluate overall team strength and championship viability.[3][8]

"Voters will consider a broad range of results and performances, providing the most complete evaluation of programs," the CSCAA stated in its September 14 release. The new criteria force the 10-coach voting panels to weigh head-to-head results alongside nationally ranked individual performances, depth across events, and results from championship-style invitationals.[1][2]

The structural shift also reduces the frequency of the polls. Rather than a monthly release, the CSCAA will issue just five Top 25 rankings throughout the 2026-27 season, aligning with critical checkpoints in the collegiate calendar. Following this preseason release, the next poll drops on October 29, with subsequent updates in December, February, and March leading into the NCAA Championships.[1][3]

The revamped criteria mean early-season intrasquad meets and October duals will be scrutinized for top-end speed and depth rather than just team scores. Programs across the country are already gearing up: LSU, whose men rank 14th and women 17th, hits the water for its Purple & Gold Intrasquad on September 19, while 24th-ranked Texas A&M opens against TCU on September 25.[6][7]

For the unanimous No. 1 programs, the pressure begins immediately. Texas head coach Bob Bowman, entering his third season in Austin, leads the Longhorns into their season-opening Sam Kendricks Dust Off Your Boots Classic on September 25. With the CSCAA's new comprehensive evaluation model in place, every split from opening weekend onward will factor into whether Texas and Virginia can hold their perfect 250-point scores through to March.[5][8]
