AC Milan brushed aside a bruising Europa League defeat to secure a commanding 2-0 away victory over Udinese on Sunday night at the Bluenergy Stadium. Christian Pulisic and Omari Hutchinson provided the finishing touches, but it was a 41-year-old Luka Modrić who pulled the strings, orchestrating a bounce-back performance that extends manager Rúben Amorim’s unbeaten Serie A start to eight matches.[1][3]

The Rossoneri arrived in Udine under immense pressure, needing a definitive response after Thursday’s 3-0 thrashing by Bournemouth, and they found it within six minutes. Catching the Udinese defense completely asleep, Modrić floated a quick, visionary free-kick over the top. Pulisic plucked the ball out of the sky, beat the offside trap, and slotted a cool finish past goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to instantly seize control of the match.[1][5]

"It gave Milan scoreboard control and the freedom to dictate possession," noted Sofascore's tactical breakdown. The early breakthrough allowed Amorim’s side to settle comfortably into their 4-4-1-1 shape, dominating the ball and neutralizing Udinese’s physical, combative midfield before the hosts could establish any rhythm.[3][6]

Suffocating the Hosts

Udinese manager Kosta Runjaić set his side up in a rugged 3-4-2-1 to disrupt Milan’s passing lanes, and the first half quickly turned scrappy. Referee Matteo Marcenaro handed out bookings to Gonçalo Ramos and Jesper Karlström before the break as the tackles flew in. Yet despite the physical edge, Udinese struggled to turn their energy into high-value chances, managing just 0.42 expected goals across the entire 90 minutes.[2][3]

Milan’s control was absolute. They finished the match with 60 percent possession, completing 536 accurate passes and repeatedly pinning the hosts deep inside their own penalty area. The defensive pairing of Fikayo Tomori and Strahinja Pavlović snuffed out Keinan Davis’s isolated attacking runs, while Mike Maignan preserved his clean sheet with a crucial point-blank save late in the contest.[1][3][4]

The visitors could have doubled their lead much earlier, generating a hefty 3.12 expected goals from their 19 shots. Davide Bartesaghi lashed a left-footed effort over the crossbar after being slipped in by Pulisic, and Gonçalo Ramos later saw a thunderous first-time strike superbly tipped onto the woodwork by Okoye.[1][3][4]

Hutchinson Seals the Points

The decisive blow finally landed in the 65th minute. Following an incisive move that started from the back with Tomori, Ardon Jashari unleashed a driving effort from the edge of the box. Okoye managed to parry the initial shot, but Hutchinson reacted fastest, pouncing on the rebound and smashing a right-footed strike high into the net.[3][4]

It was Hutchinson’s first goal since joining Milan on loan, effectively ending the contest and allowing Amorim to rotate his squad. Late introductions of Yunus Musah and Ruben Loftus-Cheek provided vital ball security to comfortably close out the game, matching Milan's best historical away record against Udinese from the 1999–2001 era.[1][2][4]

The result keeps Milan firmly in the title race, sitting within four points of leaders Inter. For Udinese, the defeat extends a miserable run of form that leaves them hovering just above the relegation zone on goal difference, having failed to register a league win since late August.[1][2][5]
