The U.S. military's effort to integrate artificial intelligence has crossed a historic threshold. According to the Pentagon's chief technology officer, the Department of Defense's AI user base has exploded by 1,775% over the past year.[1]
Roughly 1.5 million personnel—nearly half of the department's 3.5 million-strong workforce—are now using generative AI tools on a daily basis. This marks a massive leap from the 80,000 users recorded in December 2025.

The surge in usage is largely attributed to the launch of GenAI.mil, an enterprise platform that brought commercial frontier models—starting with Google's Gemini—directly to unclassified military networks.
Emil Michael, the undersecretary for research and engineering, noted that the department intentionally bypassed traditional, sluggish rollout procedures. He explained that because the rules were initially unclear, leadership simply made the tools available and allowed personnel to discover their own efficiencies, mimicking how they use AI in their private lives.
