NFL Power Rankings: Bills and Chiefs Surge as Caleb Williams' Injury Upends the Bears

The Buffalo Bills and Kansas City Chiefs dominate the top of the Week 3 boards, while the Chicago Bears plummet following a multi-week hamstring injury to quarterback Caleb Williams.

Two weeks into the 2026 NFL season, the league's hierarchy is already separating the heavyweights from the pretenders. The Buffalo Bills have seized the consensus No. 1 spot, looking like an absolute wagon behind a dialed-in Josh Allen. But the most terrifying development for the rest of the league is brewing in Kansas City, where a massive free-agent acquisition has completely rewired the Chiefs' offense.[1][2][3]

Buffalo's 2-0 start has earned them the top slot on boards from Fox Sports to PFF. They aren't just winning; they are dismantling opponents. As NBC Sports bluntly framed it: "September wins are celebratory. January wins are mandatory." But right now, Buffalo's execution on both sides of the ball makes them the undisputed team to beat in the AFC.[1][2][3]

Right on their heels are the Kansas City Chiefs, who have successfully integrated the most impactful free-agent signing of the 2026 offseason. Kenneth Walker III, lured away from Seattle with a three-year, $45 million contract in March, has transformed Andy Reid's attack. Through two games, Walker leads the NFL with 290 rushing yards and a staggering 369 scrimmage yards.[4]

The underlying metrics for Walker are absurd. He has already forced 29 missed tackles—the most through two weeks in the Next Gen Stats era—and is currently on pace for an NFL-record 2,465 rushing yards. "He's prepared himself for this workload since the spring," Chiefs running backs coach DeMarco Murray told NFL.com. The franchise is actually looking to dial back his 56-touch pace just to ensure their new battering ram survives until the postseason.[4]

Walker's underlying metrics are setting historic early-season paces.

Ironically, the team Walker left behind is thriving just as much. The Seattle Seahawks have rocketed to No. 1 on NBC Sports' power rankings and No. 3 on PFF's board. Seattle's offense hasn't missed a beat, with wideout Jaxon Smith-Njigba forcing his way into early MVP conversations and the roster proving they can win decisively even in hostile environments.[1][3]

In the NFC West, the San Francisco 49ers are keeping pace at 2-0. Quarterback Brock Purdy is making a legitimate, undeniable push into the top-five quarterback tier. WalterFootball notes that if San Francisco can finally dodge their perennial injury bug, their Super Bowl window remains wide open—especially after surviving a brutal travel schedule that kicked off with a season-opening victory in Australia.

Josh Allen has the Bills sitting atop the consensus power rankings.

The stakes at the top are high, but the fallout at the bottom is brutal. The Chicago Bears took the steepest plunge of the week, plummeting out of the top 10 after a disastrous 9-3 loss to the Vikings. The scoreboard wasn't the real casualty: franchise quarterback Caleb Williams suffered a Grade 2 hamstring injury that will sideline him for three to four weeks.[3][5]

Williams had started all 38 games of his career since being drafted No. 1 overall in 2024. Now, Chicago's NFC North title defense is on life support. With backup Tyson Bagent still navigating the concussion protocol, the Bears are staring down the very real possibility of starting veteran Case Keenum on Monday Night Football against the Philadelphia Eagles.[5]

The Bears face a grueling stretch without their franchise quarterback.

If Chicago is in crisis, the Miami Dolphins are in full-blown capitulation. Anchored to the bottom of every major power ranking, the 0-2 Dolphins are the only team in the NFL that hasn't held a lead this season. Saddled with $183.7 million in dead cap money, the roster is visibly depleted.[1][6]

The situation in South Florida is so bleak that the conversation has already shifted to April 2027. Draft analysts and fans are openly circling Texas quarterback Arch Manning as the inevitable No. 1 overall pick to save the franchise. When a fanbase is scouting college quarterbacks in September, the season is already over. For the Bills, Chiefs, and Seahawks, the real campaign is just getting started.[6]
