Nepal Banned From International Football After FIFA Cites Government Interference

FIFA has indefinitely suspended the All Nepal Football Association (ANFA), effectively freezing the Himalayan nation out of global football. The decision, handed down by the Bureau of the FIFA Council on June 24, 2026, strips Nepal of all membership rights and bars its national teams and domestic clubs from participating in any international competitions.[1][2]

The global governing body cited "flagrant violations" of its statutes, specifically pointing to undue third-party interference in the federation's operations. Under Article 14 of FIFA's regulations, national football associations must manage their affairs independently, free from government or legal meddling.[2][8]

The suspension is the culmination of a months-long power struggle between ANFA and Nepal's National Sports Council (NSC), a government body that oversees sports administration in the country. The dispute centers on ANFA's electoral process, which was scheduled to take place before the current executive committee's mandate expires in June 2026.[2][5]

Tensions boiled over in March 2026 when the NSC suspended ANFA's executive committee for three months. The government body accused the football federation of proceeding with leadership elections without its approval and demanded that ANFA amend its statutes to align with Nepal's National Sports Development Act.[2][6]

The move immediately drew the ire of international football authorities. In April, FIFA and the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) sent a joint letter warning Nepali authorities that the NSC's actions constituted a clear breach of independence rules. They gave the government a seven-day ultimatum to revoke the suspension and allow the electoral process to resume.[5][7]

Although the NSC reportedly lifted its suspension in May, FIFA determined that the underlying interference had not been fully resolved. The international body noted that the sports council continued to issue directives regarding ANFA's governance, prompting the Bureau of the FIFA Council to enact the immediate and total ban.[4][5]

The sanctions deal a devastating blow to Nepal's football ecosystem. Beyond the ban on fielding teams in FIFA and AFC tournaments, the suspension cuts off all access to crucial development funding. ANFA officials, coaches, and referees are also barred from participating in international training courses and educational initiatives.[1][4]

For a developing football nation, the freeze halts years of grassroots progress. Nepal's women's national team, currently ranked 88th in the world, and the men's team, ranked 175th, are now sidelined indefinitely. ANFA spokesman Suresh Shah acknowledged the severe impact, stating that the ban dampens the dreams of aspiring players and deprives them of vital opportunities.[4][6]

FIFA has outlined strict conditions for lifting the suspension. The world governing body requires a full and unconditional revocation of the NSC's March decisions, the reinstatement of the current ANFA Executive Committee, and a guarantee that the federation can complete its electoral process without further outside intervention.[2][6]

As the ban takes hold, Nepali sports officials are scrambling to find a resolution. Ram Charitra Mehta, a member secretary of the National Sports Council, stated that the government is looking for alternative ways to address the crisis. Until a compromise satisfies FIFA's independence mandates, Nepal remains exiled from the international game.[3][6]
