Laura Nunnink Returns to the Hoofdklasse After 16-Month Knee Injury Layoff
Dutch midfielder Laura Nunnink made her long-awaited return to the pitch for Den Bosch, headlining a week of major injury updates across global field hockey.

After 16 grueling months of rehabilitation, Dutch midfield maestro Laura Nunnink has officially returned to the pitch. The veteran playmaker made her comeback for Den Bosch during the opening weekend of the 2026-2027 Staatsloterij Hoofdklasse season.[1][2]
Nunnink sustained a severe cruciate ligament and meniscus tear on May 29, 2025, sidelining her for over a year. The injury forced her to miss crucial international fixtures as she focused entirely on her recovery.[1][2]
Her return on September 27 marked a major emotional and tactical boost for Den Bosch, a club that relies heavily on her distribution. The reigning champions opened their campaign with a dominant 7-1 victory over Pinoké, extending their historic home winning streak against the Amsterdam-based club and signaling their intent for the season.[2]
Nunnink’s presence brings immediate stability to the Den Bosch midfield. Known for her elite vision and graceful ball control, she dictates the tempo of the match and provides a steadying influence for the squad's younger talents.[1]
With her return, Den Bosch looks fully equipped to defend their Hoofdklasse title. The team remained unbeaten for the 32nd consecutive time on an opening weekend, setting a new league record.[2]
Asian Games Roster Shift
On the international stage, the Indian men's national team has been forced into a late roster adjustment at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. Midfielder Raj Kumar Pal suffered a left thumb fracture during the final pool match, ruling him out of the medal rounds.[3]
To fill the gap, Hockey India activated traveling reserve Nilakanta Sharma ahead of the high-stakes semi-final clash against Pakistan. Sharma brings significant big-game pedigree to the squad, having competed in both the Olympics and the World Cup.[3]
"It's just unfortunate for Raj," Indian chief coach Craig Fulton said in a team statement.[3]
"At the same time, we have great experience that's coming in," Fulton added. "Nilakanta has been at the Olympics, World Cup. So, it's a nice addition in terms of an experienced player coming in at an important time."[3]
India advanced to the semi-finals after a clinical, undefeated run in Pool A, scoring 49 goals across five matches. Sharma’s insertion into the midfield is expected to maintain the team's relentless attacking momentum as they chase the gold medal and direct qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.[3]
A Match-Winning Return in the US
In United States collegiate field hockey, Plymouth State University celebrated a massive injury return of its own. Sophomore goaltender Natalie Merrick made her season debut on Friday after missing the Panthers' first nine games.[4]
Merrick showed no signs of rust, anchoring her team to a 2-1 Homecoming victory over Keene State. She faced a barrage of shots, particularly in the second half, as the visiting Owls desperately pushed for an equalizer.[4]
The sophomore recorded 13 saves and allowed just a single goal, finishing the night with a stellar .929 save percentage. Nine of those crucial stops came after halftime, securing the narrow conference win.[4]
For her heroic performance in the cage, Merrick was named the Little East Conference Field Hockey Goalkeeper of the Week on October 5.[4]
These returns highlight the intense physical resilience required in modern field hockey. Whether stepping back onto the turf in the Dutch premier league after a year of rehab, or defending the net in a New England conference clash, the physical toll of the sport is matched only by the determination of its athletes to compete.
