Rotterdam and Bloemendaal Headline Blockbuster Opening Weekend as the Staatsloterij Hoofdklasse Returns

One hundred and twenty-five days after Rotterdam snatched the 2026 title from Amsterdam with a dramatic late Joakim Menini tip-in, the stakes reset to zero. The world's premier domestic field hockey league kicks off its 2026/2027 season this Sunday, September 27, under a new banner: the Staatsloterij Hoofdklasse.[1][2][4]

The marquee matchup of the opening weekend sends the defending men's champions, Rotterdam, to Sportpark 't Kopje to face traditional powerhouse Bloemendaal at 3:00 p.m. local time. Rotterdam enters the season looking to build on their historic 5-4 aggregate finals win in May, which secured their first national title since 2013.[1][2][4]

Captain Thijs van Dam, who scored the crucial equalizer in the return leg of the championship final, will again lead Rotterdam's line. They face a Bloemendaal squad that has spent the summer reloading to reclaim their spot at the top of the table and avenge last season's playoff misses.[4]

Bloemendaal's roster is headlined by Great Britain and England captain Zach Wallace, who returns to domestic action after leading his national side through the Paris 2024 cycle and the recent 2026 FIH World Cup. 'Many players who represented their countries in the Netherlands and Belgium will be seen on Dutch pitches every week from the end of September,' the league noted in its season preview. Top foreign players, including Belgium's Charlotte Englebert at Den Bosch and Spain's Borja Lacalle at Oranje-Rood, will transition directly from World Cup battles to Hoofdklasse rivalries.[5]

On the women's side, reigning national champions Amsterdam will open their campaign in front of a home crowd against Oranje-Rood at 12:45 p.m. Meanwhile, last season's runners-up, Den Bosch, will host Pinoké, and title contenders SCHC kick off on home turf against HGC.[1]

The new season also brings structural changes to the league's broadcast and scheduling format. At the request of the HHcv—the body representing the media interests of Hoofdklasse clubs—and in line with agreements with broadcaster ViaPlay, the league has moved away from split weekend fixtures.[1]

Almost all weekend matches will now be played on Sundays, with women's matches generally starting at 12:45 p.m. and men's matches following at 3:00 p.m. The streamlined schedule aims to consolidate media coverage and create a unified 'Super Sunday' experience for fans across the country.[1]
