Global Motorsport's 2027 Grid Takes Shape: Lundgaard to Ganassi, Alonso Extends, and MotoGP's Shakeup

A flurry of late-September signings has locked in the 2027 racing landscape, headlined by Christian Lundgaard's blockbuster move to Chip Ganassi Racing and Fernando Alonso's extension with Aston Martin.

The 2027 global motorsport grid isn't just shuffling—it is undergoing a seismic, cross-discipline realignment. From a dynasty-ending blockbuster in IndyCar to Formula 1 securing its most tenured warrior, late September has fundamentally reshaped the racing landscape. The silly season is officially over, and the stakes for next year are already locked in.

The Ganassi-McLaren Blockbuster

In North America, the biggest domino fell on September 29. Chip Ganassi Racing confirmed a multi-year deal with 25-year-old Christian Lundgaard to pilot the iconic No. 9 PNC Bank Honda starting in 2027. The move finalizes a staggering seat swap that sends six-time series champion Scott Dixon to Arrow McLaren after a 24-year run at Ganassi.[1][4]

"It is an honor and a privilege to join Chip Ganassi Racing beginning next season," Lundgaard said following the announcement. "The fact that it is in the iconic No. 9 PNC Bank Honda makes it even more special."[4]

Lundgaard earned the premier seat after a breakout 2026 campaign. The Danish driver captured two victories—at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course and Road America—and secured a career-best third-place finish in the championship standings. He joins a powerhouse Ganassi roster alongside five-time champion Alex Palou and Kyffin Simpson.[4][6]

The blockbuster seat swap reshapes the top tier of the NTT IndyCar Series.

Ganassi management wasted no time securing their future. "We know he's capable of accomplishing even more in the NTT IndyCar Series, and we're looking forward to helping him reach that next level with the No. 9 team," team owner Chip Ganassi stated. "He's already proven he can win races, and it isn't often a driver of his caliber becomes available."[1]

The transition represents a massive culture shift for the Ganassi garage. Dixon had piloted the No. 9 entry for a quarter of a century, establishing a legacy that includes a 2008 Indianapolis 500 victory and an iron grip on the series record books. Lundgaard now inherits both the legendary chassis and the immense pressure that comes with it.[1][6]

Aston Martin Locks Down Alonso

Across the Atlantic, Formula 1 is opting for stability over chaos. Aston Martin Aramco formally announced on September 29 that two-time world champion Fernando Alonso will extend his contract into the 2027 season. The extension ensures the Spaniard will continue racing at the pinnacle of motorsport at age 46, partnering once again with Lance Stroll.[2]

"I'm very happy to sign a new contract with Aston Martin Aramco," Alonso said in the team's release. "I took my time to make this decision, but racing is my life, my passion, and I know I still have the speed and determination to compete at the highest level."[2]

Fernando Alonso will extend his record-breaking Formula 1 career into the 2027 season.

Alonso is already Formula 1's most experienced driver, boasting over 440 grand prix starts since his 2001 debut. While Aston Martin struggled with chassis and engine issues throughout the 2026 campaign, the team is banking on the continuity of its veteran lineup to navigate the sweeping 2026-to-2027 development cycle.[2]

MotoGP's Radical Reshuffle

Meanwhile, two-wheeled motorsport has finalized a ruthless game of musical chairs. The MotoGP grid is now completely locked in for 2027, a season that will introduce radical 850cc engines and Pirelli tires. The final piece of the puzzle fell into place when 20-year-old Australian Senna Agius was confirmed to join Luca Marini at Tech3 KTM.[3]

"Today, a lifelong dream of mine has come true: reaching MotoGP," Agius said. "So many years of hard work have gone into this moment, and I'm incredibly grateful to Guenther and everyone at Tech3 for believing in me and giving me this opportunity."[3]

Agius's signing caps off a frenzied rider market that saw massive factory shakeups. Pedro Acosta is heading to the factory Ducati squad alongside Marc Marquez, while reigning championship leader Jorge Martin pivots to Yamaha. Over at Red Bull KTM, Alex Marquez and Fabio Di Giannantonio will form an all-new lineup, completely overhauling the Austrian manufacturer's attack.[3][5]

With the ink dry across three major world championships, the focus shifts entirely to development. The drivers are set, the contracts are filed, and the countdown to the 2027 green flags has officially begun. The teams that moved fastest in September will be the ones hitting the track with clear heads come January.
