Firefly Aerospace and SSC Space Secure First Orbital Launches from Mainland Europe

Inside the newly completed launch control center at Launch Complex 3C, located 200 kilometers north of the Arctic Circle at Sweden's Esrange Space Center, executives from Texas-based Firefly Aerospace and the Swedish Space Corporation (SSC) finalized a contract on Wednesday morning. Surrounded by the tracking and control systems that will soon monitor orbital trajectories, the two companies signed a multi-launch agreement for two Alpha rocket missions. The deal, targeted for no earlier than 2028, marks the final commercial step in transforming a historic sounding-rocket range into continental Europe's first operational orbital spaceport.[1]
The agreement secures the full payload capacity of both Alpha rockets for SSC Space, which will allocate the space to Swedish national security customers and commercial rideshare operators. It operates under a "launch as a franchise" model, where Firefly provides the vehicle and technical support while SSC manages the customer integration and launch site operations. "This contract validates the demand from European customers for long-awaited orbital launch capabilities directly from mainland Europe," said Jason Kim, CEO of Firefly Aerospace.[1][2]
The path to Wednesday's signing required navigating a complex web of international regulations. In June 2025, the United States and Sweden signed a Technology Safeguards Agreement (TSA) at the Swedish Embassy in Washington, D.C., establishing the legal framework required to handle sensitive American rocket technology on foreign soil. That was followed in April 2026 by a launch licensing coordination agreement between the Swedish National Space Agency and the US Federal Aviation Administration, clearing the regulatory hurdles for US commercial rockets to fly from Swedish spaceports.[3][5]
With the paperwork settled, physical infrastructure has rapidly materialized in the Arctic tundra. SSC Space has already completed the payload processing facility, the launch vehicle integration building, and the necessary security and storage depots at Launch Complex 3C. The final phase of construction is now focused on the launch pad itself, preparing the 20-square-kilometer site to receive Firefly Alpha rockets shipped from the United States.[1][5]

The push for a Swedish spaceport comes as the global launch market faces unprecedented strain. Existing US launch sites, including Vandenberg Space Force Base and Cape Canaveral, are approaching operational capacity, while major rideshare programs like SpaceX's Transporter missions are reportedly booked through 2028. By opening a new launch corridor, Firefly and SSC are building critical supply chain resilience for both commercial operators and NATO allies.[3]
"These first two missions are just the start of a long-term, multi-launch partnership with SSC Space that will provide assured access to space for years to come with our proven Alpha rocket," Kim noted. He emphasized that the partnership provides the United States and its allies with "the launch site diversification required for resilient, responsive space missions."
The geographic location of Esrange offers distinct orbital advantages. Situated in the sparsely populated Kiruna region, the facility allows for safe launch trajectories over a 5,600-square-kilometer impact area. More importantly, its high-latitude position is ideal for launching payloads into Sun-Synchronous Orbits (SSO) and polar orbits, which are in high demand for Earth observation, climate monitoring, and intelligence gathering.[3][5]
For Sweden, the agreement represents a significant leap in sovereign defense capabilities. In March 2026, SSC Space signed a 209 million SEK ($21.5 million) contract with the Swedish Defence Materiel Administration to establish this exact capability. The initiative is part of a broader government mandate to allocate approximately 1 billion SEK to the Swedish Armed Forces through 2032 to develop national space capabilities, including improved space situational awareness and independent satellite launch operations.[4]
The franchise model pioneered at Esrange may soon serve as a blueprint for other international spaceports. Firefly is already conducting feasibility studies to replicate the arrangement at Japan's Hokkaido Spaceport, aiming to distribute launch operations globally. As the 2028 target approaches, the focus shifts from diplomacy and construction to the logistical challenge of executing a transatlantic launch campaign, setting the stage for a new era of European space access.[3]
