CPSC Recalls Over 4,000 Amazon Hair Dryer Brushes Due to Electrocution and Fire Risks

When the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recalled 31,000 Prepared Hero fire spray canisters earlier this month, the hazard involved a pressurized container failing during an active emergency. The recall of more than 4,000 Wantefully and DHASUWT hair dryer brushes issued this week centers on a different kind of failure: the absence of a mandatory safety mechanism designed to prevent an emergency from happening in the first place. The styling tools lack an integrated immersion protection device, a standard feature that automatically cuts power if an appliance falls into water.[4][1][5][2]

The missing safeguard places the devices in direct violation of federal safety regulations for hair dryers. The CPSC stated in its official notice that the defect "presents a substantial product hazard to consumers," warning of the "risk of death or serious injury from electrocution or shock if the hair dryers fall into water while plugged in." The agency has instructed owners to immediately unplug the devices and stop using them.[1][2]

The recall covers approximately 2,295 Wantefully units and 1,738 DHASUWT units, all bearing the model number XR-8801. The tools function as 2-in-1 hot air brushes, combining a blow dryer and a styling brush into a single handheld device. They are designed as black paddle brushes with a striped pink pattern, pink-tipped bristles, and three selectable heat settings. The packaging is marked with the brand name "XRUI" and the model number "XR-8801".[1][5][2][3]

Both brands were manufactured in China and sold exclusively online through Amazon. The Wantefully brushes were available from February 2026 through March 2026 for approximately $30, imported by Guang Zhou. The DHASUWT versions were sold by Junkins between October 2024 and June 2026 for about $27. Because the products were distributed through a single major online retailer, the affected units are spread nationwide rather than concentrated in specific regional markets.[2][3][1][5]

Beyond the electrocution hazard, the CPSC noted that both versions of the XR-8801 brush are prone to severe overheating, which creates secondary burn and fire risks. The DHASUWT recall follows 10 separate consumer reports of the hair dryer brushes smoking or catching fire during use. Guang Zhou has received one report of a Wantefully brush overheating and melting. No injuries have been reported in connection with either brand.[1][5][3]

Product liability law firms have already begun reviewing the safety notices, noting that the lack of federally mandated safety standards exposes consumers to severe risks. The CPSC has classified the Wantefully action as a Fast Track Recall, a process used when a company voluntarily agrees to pull a product and works directly with the agency to notify the public quickly.[6][1]

To process a full refund, both Guang Zhou and Junkins require buyers to render the styling tools permanently unusable. Consumers must cut the power cord and email a photograph of the destroyed product to the respective manufacturer. The CPSC advises against throwing intact recalled electronics into household trash, as they could be retrieved and used by others unaware of the fatal shock hazard.[2][3][4]
