Air Force Accelerates $10 Million Reaper Replacement as General Atomics Unveils 'Wildfire' Drone

For years, defense industry analysts and early Air Force capability requests assumed the successor to the MQ-9 Reaper would be a highly survivable, exquisite stealth platform capable of penetrating the most heavily defended airspace on earth. But operational data from the Middle East has forced a structural pivot. After losing dozens of Reapers to Iranian air defenses in a matter of months, the U.S. Air Force is accelerating the "Massed Modular Aircraft" (MMA) program—a push for a $10 million, attrition-tolerant drone designed to be fielded in volume and lost in combat without breaking the force structure.[1][2][3]

The company claims the new medium-altitude, long-endurance drone exceeds the Pentagon's baseline requirements, offering an 8,000-nautical-mile ferry range and a payload capacity capable of carrying two Long-Range Anti-Ship Missiles (LRASM) or four Joint Strike Missiles. The legacy Reaper cannot carry either weapon. "This is exactly the right design for high-demand missions and cost-conscious customers," GA-ASI President David R. Alexander stated in the release, emphasizing that the aircraft merges the best features of proven systems with lower-cost components.[1][4][6]
The evidence for Wildfire's cost reduction lies in its architecture. Unlike the Reaper, which relies on a dedicated ground control station and a distinctive dorsal hump for traditional satellite communications, Wildfire is designed to use proliferated low-earth orbit (LEO) networks like Starshield. Furthermore, it abandons proprietary control systems in favor of the Autonomy Government Reference Architecture (A-GRA). This allows a single human operator to manage multiple aircraft simultaneously, drawing on autonomy software developed for the FQ-42A Collaborative Combat Aircraft. The Defense Innovation Unit's MMA solicitation demands a minimum payload of 2,800 pounds and an unrefueled combat radius of 2,300 nautical miles. General Atomics asserts that Wildfire's stronger hardpoints and reimagined modularity not only meet these targets but allow the aircraft to function as a versatile "truck" for kinetic effects and electronic warfare payloads. By stripping out exquisite sensors and relying on modular payload interfaces, the design shifts the value from the airframe to the munitions it carries, forcing adversaries to expend expensive interceptors on cheap drones.[1][2][4][6]
While the $10 million unit cost is the program's defining metric, the evidence supporting that figure remains thin. Air Force officials acknowledge that the $10 million estimate covers only the base air vehicle, excluding the sensors, weapons, and mission systems required for combat operations. It is not yet clear how much a fully missionized MMA will actually cost once those modular payloads are integrated, nor whether General Atomics can achieve the necessary production scale to drive down the airframe price to that target. The Air Force intends to select multiple vendors for the MMA concept refinement phase in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, ensuring that General Atomics will face competition from non-traditional defense contractors. The MMA program represents a fundamental rewrite of U.S. aerial warfare doctrine. By prioritizing mass, modularity, and attrition tolerance over survivability, the Air Force is acknowledging that the era of uncontested airspace is over. The deciding factor will not be whether Wildfire or a competing design can fly further or carry more, but whether the defense industrial base can actually produce them cheaply enough that commanders are willing to let them be shot down. If successful, the program will transition the drone fleet from a boutique counter-terrorism asset into a high-volume conventional warfare tool.[1][2][5]
