The United World Wrestling rankings have locked in the seeds for the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, with Russian superstar Zavur Uguev holding the top spot. Meanwhile, 19-year-old American Marcus Blaze surges into the field as a dangerous unseeded threat.

The United World Wrestling Ranking Series has officially concluded, locking in the final seeds for the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. When the tournament kicks off on October 24, the 61-kilogram freestyle bracket will feature a dramatic race between an undefeated Russian veteran and a surging American teenager.[1]
The UWW standings dictate the tournament's critical seeding, relying on points accumulated at Ranking Series events, the 2025 World Championships, and the 2026 Continental Championships. These rankings establish a clear hierarchy, separating the top contenders to prevent early-round eliminations among the favorites.[1]
At the absolute pinnacle of the 61 kg standings sits Zavur Uguev, the reigning world champion and 2020 Olympic gold medalist. Uguev enters the Astana tournament as the undisputed number one seed, carrying a reputation as the most credentialed wrestler in the field.[1]
Uguev has been virtually untouchable on the international stage, riding a staggering 27-match winning streak. His dominant run includes a recent 4-0 victory over Albania's Zelimkhan Abakarov in April to capture his second consecutive European Championship in Tirana.[1][2]
"Last year I won my first European gold medal," Uguev said following his victory in Albania. "My first two or three medals, I was still young and things didn't work out. There were very experienced athletes competing, and I gained experience from them."[2]
The Teenage Challenger
While Uguev commands the top seed, the most disruptive force in the championship race is unseeded 19-year-old American Marcus Blaze. Blaze will represent Team USA in Astana following a meteoric rise through the domestic and international ranks.[1][6]
Blaze secured his spot on the U.S. World Team in June by defeating NCAA champion Jax Forrest at the Final X event in Newark. That decisive victory cemented his status as a legitimate senior-level threat following a standout true freshman season at Penn State University.[3][5][6]
"Coming into college with high expectations due to the caliber of wrestler he is was a daunting task, but I thought he did phenomenal," Perrysburg coach Scott Burnett said of Blaze's 25-3 collegiate campaign.[3]
Blaze’s international resume already includes a 2025 U20 World Championship gold medal, where he recorded technical falls in four of his five matches. Despite lacking the senior Ranking Series points to earn a top seed in Astana, his defensive prowess makes him a dangerous draw for the established leaders.[1][5][6]
"He has put together impressive wins against some very impressive competitors," Burnett added. "Marcus is an ultimate competitor, but he also knows that there are bigger and greater things outside of wrestling and that understanding gives him great balance and purpose."[3]
The Chasing Pack
Sitting directly behind Uguev in the projected seeding is Iran's Ahmad Javan, the 2025 World silver medalist. Javan secured the number two seed after a consistent 2026 season that included a bronze medal at the Asian Wrestling Championships in Bishkek.[1][4]
Javan overwhelmed South Korea's Changsu Kim 12-0 to claim his second straight Asian bronze in April. His high seeding ensures he remains on the opposite side of the bracket from Uguev, setting up a potential finals collision between the two technical masters.[1][4]
Albania's Zelimkhan Abakarov, the 2022 World Champion at 57 kg, occupies the fourth seed in the 61 kg standings. Abakarov has consistently challenged Uguev, most recently falling short in the European Championship final, and remains a top contender for the gold.[1][7]
The 61 kg field also features surging competitors like North Korea's Kwang Myong Kim, who won gold at the Asian Championships by defeating India's Aman Sehrawat 13-10. Kim's unorthodox, high-amplitude counter-attacks have rapidly elevated his standing on the global stage.[1]
The 61 kg field also features surging competitors like North Korea's Kwang Myong Kim, who won gold at the Asian Championships by defeating India's Aman Sehrawat 13-10.
India's Deepak also enters the fray after a solid year, winning gold at the 2026 Ulaanbaatar Open and climbing into the top 20 of the global rankings. While not a favorite for gold, his recent victories over ranked opponents make him a tough matchup for any medal contender.[1]
As the October 24 start date approaches, the UWW standings have set the stage for a clash of generations. The veteran Uguev must navigate a bracket filled with hungry challengers to maintain his flawless streak and secure another world title.[1]
