UEFA Warns Italy That Political Interference in FIGC Could Jeopardize Euro 2032 Hosting Rights

UEFA President Aleksander Čeferin holds the unilateral authority to strip a nation of its European Championship hosting rights, and on Sunday, he placed Italy’s 2032 tournament directly in the crosshairs. Responding to ongoing legislative efforts in Rome that would impose external oversight on the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), the governing body’s chief executive warned that any government mandate could fundamentally breach UEFA statutes.[1][5]

The standoff centers on a push by Italian lawmakers to establish an independent government agency to oversee the financial budgets of professional sports clubs, effectively bypassing the FIGC. Čeferin made it clear that such a move crosses a non-negotiable regulatory line. "An eventual commissioning of the FIGC could undermine UEFA's trust toward Euro 2032," Čeferin stated, directly linking the domestic political maneuver to the 24-team international tournament.[3][5]

Italy is currently slated to co-host the 2032 European Championship alongside Turkey, an agreement that divides the tournament across 10 stadiums—5 in each nation. For Italy, the event represents a critical catalyst to renovate an aging infrastructure grid where the average Serie A stadium is now more than 60 years old.[2][5]

The tension stems from a prolonged power struggle between the 20 clubs of Serie A and the FIGC leadership under President Gabriele Gravina. Serie A executives have lobbied the Italian government for greater autonomy, seeking a structural model closer to the English Premier League, which operates with significant independence from the English Football Association.[4][5]

In response, Italian politicians drafted legislation that would create a new oversight commission, stripping the FIGC of its exclusive authority to monitor club finances and register teams for the domestic championship. "Political interference undermines UEFA's trust," Čeferin reiterated, emphasizing that the governing body does not compromise on the autonomy of its 55 member associations. The timing of the political dispute is particularly precarious for the FIGC. By October 2026, Italy must submit its final dossier of the 5 host cities and fully funded stadium renovation plans to UEFA headquarters in Nyon, Switzerland. Any lingering uncertainty over the federation's governance structure could give the executive committee grounds to reject the Italian bid entirely and hand full hosting duties to Turkey.[3][4]

Italian Minister for Sport Andrea Abodi has attempted to mediate the crisis, revising initial drafts of the legislation to soften the powers of the proposed oversight body.
