Northampton Saints Open Title Defense With 59-26 Demolition of Newcastle Red Bulls

Defending champions Northampton Saints launched their 2026-27 Premiership campaign with a nine-try victory, highlighted by hat-tricks from Tommy Freeman and 19-year-old James Pater.

Nineteen-year-old James Pater needed exactly 15 minutes to announce his arrival in the Gallagher Premiership. Starting at full-back on opening night, the teenager crossed the whitewash twice in the opening quarter, setting the tone as the defending champion Northampton Saints hung 59 points on the Newcastle Red Bulls at Franklin's Gardens.[1][4]

Going back-to-back in England's top flight is a notoriously difficult assignment—no club has managed it in seven years. But Friday night's 59-26 demolition sent a clear message that the Saints are reloading rather than rebuilding for the 2026-27 campaign.[1][5]

Northampton secured their four-try bonus point before the halftime whistle, taking a commanding 31-14 lead into the locker room. They ultimately crossed the line nine times, overwhelming a revamped Newcastle defense that simply could not track the hosts' ball speed and offloading game.[2][3]

The Saints secured their attacking bonus point before halftime.

Pater finished the night with a hat-trick, a feat matched by England international Tommy Freeman, who ruthlessly exploited the edges. Fly-half Fin Smith directed the onslaught, adding five conversions to keep the scoreboard ticking upward.[2][4]

"Our set piece we need to tighten up a bit on that first phase," Freeman told BBC Radio Northampton after the match, refusing to rest on the blowout margin. "Defensively we were caught a bit tight, but credit to Newcastle for stressing us in those areas but we would like to see better movement."[4]

Addressing the weight of the title defense, Freeman acknowledged the historical headwind. "It is always a challenge and going back-to-back is not done by many teams. There is a reason for that but we will be looking to take each week as it comes and keep putting our DNA on the pitch."[4]

The opening night also belonged to flanker Henry Pollock, who marked his 50th appearance for the club. The milestone was sweetened by a newly signed £400,000 contract extension, cementing the dynamic forward's role in the Saints' back row for the foreseeable future.[3][4]

Nineteen-year-old James Pater scored a hat-trick in his Premiership debut.

For the newly rebranded Newcastle Red Bulls, the night was a harsh welcome to the new season, compounded by severe discipline issues. The visitors played 20 minutes with 14 men; Harrison Obatoyinbo was sin-binned for a trip in the first half, and prop Pouri Rakete-Stones saw yellow for a head-on-head tackle after the break.[2][4]

Despite the numerical disadvantages and the heavy deficit, the Red Bulls kept swinging. Christian Wade scored twice, and Werner Kok crossed with the very last play of the game to secure a crucial losing try bonus point for the visitors. Zack Henry also added a touchline conversion on his league debut.[2][3]

Earning a point on the road against the defending champions gives Newcastle a tangible building block. For Northampton, the 33-point margin sets an immediate benchmark for the rest of the league. The question isn't whether the Saints can score; it's whether anyone else can keep up.[1][5]
