The defense of global undersea infrastructure relies entirely on intercepting sabotage before it occurs, because the physical evidence of a severed cable rarely identifies the vessel that cut it. In the spring of 2026, naval forces from the United Kingdom, Norway, and the United States applied that doctrine in the Arctic Ocean, tracking and confronting Russian submarines near the Svalbard archipelago. The diplomatic fallout from the Svalbard interception has moved through quiet channels. Following the spring confrontation, British and Norwegian officials presented their tracking data directly to Moscow to demonstrate their visibility into the new technology.
