Mara Winter and Héctor Álvarez Seize U23 European Road Race Titles in Slovenia

Switzerland's Mara Winter stunned a WorldTour-heavy lead group to claim the women's U23 European road race title, while Spain's Héctor Álvarez rode a 34-kilometer solo attack to men's gold.

Mara Winter and Héctor Álvarez both seized U23 European road race titles on Friday, turning near-misses at last week's World Championships into gold. The races in Sencur, Slovenia, delivered a pair of dramatic finales, with Winter winning a tense sprint and Álvarez surviving a grueling solo breakaway.[1][3]

The victories completely reshape the late-season hierarchy for the under-23 peloton. Both riders arrived in Slovenia looking for redemption after agonizing results in Montreal, where Álvarez took silver and Winter missed the podium in fourth.[2][3]

Winter Stuns the WorldTour Elite

Winter’s victory in the 88-kilometer women’s race came against a heavily favored field. The 20-year-old Swiss rider, who competes for the Continental squad Nexetis, had to navigate a course featuring four ascents of the Mozjanca climb.[1][2]

The Dutch national team controlled the pace from the start, using the first two laps to soften up the peloton. The race finally fractured on the third ascent, when Winter went clear alongside Megan Arens, the reigning junior time trial world champion.[2]

On the fourth and final climb, which averages a punishing 10 percent gradient over two kilometers, the chase group shattered. World Champion Viktória Chladoňová and Nienke Vinke bridged across to Winter and Arens on the steepest sections, setting up a four-way battle for the title.[1][2]

Facing a newly crowned World Champion and two Dutch WorldTour riders, Winter was the clear underdog. Yet as the group entered the final, technical kilometer, she boldly took control of the pace and led the sprint out from the front.[1][2]

The long-range effort proved decisive. Winter held off Vinke by a wheel at the line, with Chladoňová taking bronze. "I can't believe it, I think I'm dreaming," Winter said, securing the biggest victory of her young career.[2]

Álvarez's Relentless Solo Attack

The men’s race featured an equally dramatic tactical battle, though it unfolded much later in the afternoon. For the first 80 kilometers, the peloton remained entirely intact, with no early breakaway managing to snap the elastic on the flat opening roads.[3]

Before Álvarez made his decisive move, the Italian team tried to break the deadlock. Roberto Capello attacked with just under two laps to go, building a 30-second lead before Germany's Max Bock reeled him in on the penultimate climb.[3]

The dynamic shifted violently once the race reached the local circuits. Álvarez launched his first major move with 34 kilometers remaining, attacking from the back of a ten-rider group to exploit the rolling terrain just after the summit.[3][4]

The Spaniard quickly built a 30-second advantage, settling into a solo rhythm while the Belgian squad organized a desperate chase behind him. As the race hit the penultimate climb, the chase group swelled, and Álvarez was eventually reeled in by a select group of favorites.[3][4]

The catch created a four-man lead group featuring Álvarez, Poland's Jan Jackowiak, Belgium's Niels Driesen, and the Netherlands' Daan Dijkman. Rather than sitting up, Álvarez and the heavier Jackowiak used their power to distance the smaller climbers over the top of the final ascent.[3]

Héctor Álvarez dropped his breakaway companions on the final descent to secure his solo victory.

Álvarez then took massive risks on the ensuing descent, dropping Jackowiak to open a 10-second gap at the bottom. He extended his advantage on the flat run-in, crossing the line 20 seconds ahead of the Polish rider to claim the European jersey.[3][4]

"We need to say finally," Álvarez said after the finish. "I was following this for a real long time; it's two years without the win." The victory secures a major title for the Spaniard before his highly anticipated move to Lidl-Trek's WorldTour squad in 2027.[4]

For the under-23 peloton, the European Championships provided a definitive conclusion to the championship season. While the WorldTour standings remain dominated by established names, Friday's results in Slovenia highlight the immediate generation preparing to challenge them.[1][3]
