Lazio's traveling supporters turned the Mapei Stadium into a home fixture on Tuesday night, and their side rewarded them with a ruthless 6-2 dismantling of Sassuolo. The emphatic victory moved Gennaro Gattuso's unbeaten squad three points clear at the top of Serie A.[1][5]
Around 10,000 Roman fans made the journey north, continuing their boycott of home matches in protest of club president Claudio Lotito. They witnessed a historic performance, as the result gave Lazio 25 points from nine matches, marking their highest points tally at this stage in the club's top-flight history.[2][5]
The match erupted immediately, delivering four goals in a breathless opening 16 minutes. Kenneth Taylor swept Lazio ahead in the second minute after a long VAR check, pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area. Sassuolo responded just five minutes later when Kristian Thorstvedt leveled the score with a first-time finish.[1][3]
The visitors quickly reasserted their dominance through precise attacking sequences. Gustav Isaksen restored the lead in the 13th minute, cutting inside to curl a trademark left-footed strike into the far corner. Romano Floriani Mussolini then tapped in his first Serie A goal three minutes later, finishing a brilliant passing move.[3][5]
The contest tilted permanently in Lazio's favor just past the half-hour mark. Thorstvedt caught Mattia Zaccagni with a high, studs-up challenge, earning a straight red card and leaving Alberto Aquilani's hosts with 10 men. Zaccagni was fortunate to escape serious injury from the dangerous tackle.[3]
Despite the numerical disadvantage, Sassuolo refused to fold before halftime. Sebastiano Esposito halved the deficit to 3-2 in the 43rd minute, chesting down a cross and firing past Christos Mandas. However, Zaccagni ensured Lazio carried a comfortable cushion into the break, heading home an Isaksen cross in stoppage time.[1][4]
The second half transformed into a bizarre duel between Lazio's attackers and Sassuolo goalkeeper Stefano Turati. Turati smothered a weak penalty from Zaccagni in the 51st minute, briefly keeping the hosts faintly alive. The save sparked a frantic sequence of attacking waves from the league leaders.[1]
Tijjani Noslin finally broke Turati's resistance again, bending a superb strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the box in the 55th minute. Turati responded by saving a second penalty just past the hour mark, this time denying Davide Frattesi after Isaksen was brought down.[4]
Noslin remained unfazed by the penalty drama, completing his brace in the 65th minute with a sensational effort into the top corner. The Dutch striker's double capped a relentless offensive display that generated 3.39 expected goals and overwhelmed a struggling Sassuolo defense.[5]
The defeat leaves Sassuolo languishing near the relegation zone with just eight points, having scraped a single point from their last four matches. Lazio, meanwhile, secured their fifth consecutive away victory, matching a club record set under Roberto Mancini during the 2002-03 campaign.[4][5]
"YESSSS!!! QUINTA VITTORIA CONSECUTIVA!!!" the official Lazio account posted on social media following the final whistle. The celebratory message underscored the mood for a squad that has now firmly established itself as a genuine title contender.
