Kimi Antonelli Holds 66-Point Lead Over George Russell as F1 Heads to Sepang

Mercedes rookie Kimi Antonelli maintains a commanding grip on the 2026 Formula 1 Drivers' Championship with eight rounds remaining. Red Bull's Max Verstappen showed renewed pace in opening practice as the grid returns to Malaysia.

The math is starting to look inevitable for Kimi Antonelli. With eight rounds remaining in the 2026 Formula 1 season, the Mercedes driver holds a commanding 66-point lead over his teammate George Russell. The paddock arrives at the Sepang International Circuit this weekend knowing the window to catch the championship leader is rapidly slamming shut.[1]

Antonelli sits on 302 points after a gritty recovery drive at the Azerbaijan Grand Prix late last month. Despite a qualifying crash that left him starting sixteenth on the grid, he carved through the field to finish fifth. That aggressive damage limitation proved exactly why he controls this title fight.[1][2]

Russell needs to force the issue to close the gap. He took the victory in Baku by a razor-thin 0.196 seconds, bringing his season total to 236 points. But with 208 points left on the board across eight races and one sprint, Russell essentially needs Antonelli to start making major mistakes.[1][2]

"This track is very cool," Russell radioed to the Mercedes pit wall during Friday's opening practice in Malaysia.[3]

Kimi Antonelli holds a 66-point advantage with 208 points remaining on the board.

Finding the limit at Sepang will be crucial. If Antonelli maintains his current buffer through the Asian leg of the calendar, he could theoretically clinch the championship before the series even reaches Las Vegas in late November.[1]

The Constructors' runaway

The intra-team battle at Mercedes is the only genuine championship fight left. The Silver Arrows have won 11 of the 15 Grands Prix so far, amassing 538 points in the Constructors' Championship. They sit a staggering 160 points clear of Ferrari, turning the team title into a mere formality.[1]

Lewis Hamilton, now in Ferrari red, holds third in the drivers' standings with 199 points. He secured a landmark 106th career victory earlier this summer in Spain, but the Scuderia simply hasn't matched the relentless development pace coming out of the Mercedes garage.[1][4]

Charles Leclerc trails his teammate in fifth with 179 points. The Monegasque driver finished fourth in Baku but has struggled with consistency, enduring three retirements this season due to brake and hydraulic failures.[1][2]

Lando Norris sits between the two Ferraris in fourth with 186 points. The McLaren driver suffered a brutal setback in Azerbaijan, retiring after being taken out late in the race. That zero-point weekend effectively ended his realistic championship hopes.[1][2]

Mercedes has won 11 of 15 Grands Prix, building an insurmountable 160-point lead over Ferrari.

Red Bull finds late pace

Then there is Max Verstappen. The Red Bull driver has endured a winless streak stretching back to Austria, sitting sixth in the standings with 163 points. But the Dutchman is finally showing flashes of the pace that delivered his previous world titles.[1]

Verstappen topped the timesheets in Friday's Free Practice 1 at Sepang, clocking a 1:37.520 on the medium compound. He edged out Russell by nearly four-tenths of a second, signaling that Red Bull might finally have a setup that can challenge the Mercedes front row.[3]

His rookie teammate, Isack Hadjar, is also finding his footing. Hadjar secured a crucial third-place finish in Baku, bringing his season total to 71 points and proving the Red Bull chassis still has podium potential in dirty air.[1][2]

Further down the grid, the Racing Bulls are quietly stacking points. Arvid Lindblad secured a seventh-place finish in Baku, adding to a string of top-ten results that has kept the midfield battle fiercely competitive.[2]

The Sepang wildcard

Formula 1's return to Malaysia—hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix in a unique 2026 calendar quirk—throws a massive variable into the title race. The Sepang circuit hasn't hosted the grid since 2017, meaning most of the current field has zero competitive data on the high-degradation track.[3]

Formula 1's return to Malaysia—hosting the Bahrain Grand Prix in a unique 2026 calendar quirk—throws a massive variable into the title race.

Track temperatures and brutal humidity will test the hybrid power units to their absolute limits. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto was already reporting extreme heat in the cockpit during the opening 15 minutes of practice, a preview of the physical toll Sunday's race will demand.[3]

For the rest of the grid, the engineering focus is already shifting to 2027 development. But for the two men in the Mercedes garage, the next eight weeks are a high-speed chess match where every safety car restart carries season-defining weight.
