Italy Completes Flawless EuroVolley Group Stage as Knockout Phase Arrives in Turin and Sofia

The 60-match group stage of the 2026 CEV Men's European Volleyball Championship is in the books, and the host Italians are the only squad left standing without a scratch. Italy secured a flawless 5-0 record in Pool A after outlasting a resilient Slovenian side in a five-set absolute thriller—25-19, 25-22, 27-29, 19-25, 15-9—to close out the preliminary phase on September 18.[1][2]

The stakes for this biennial tournament could not be higher. Beyond the continental crown, the eventual champion will secure Europe's first direct ticket to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games. On top of that, the top three finishers will earn coveted berths to the 2027 FIVB Men's World Cup, making every set in the knockout phase a battle for the sport's immediate future.[4]

The sprawling field of 24 has now been whittled down to a ruthless 16. The Round of 16 and quarterfinals will be split between Turin's Palavela arena in Italy and the Arena 8888 in Sofia, Bulgaria. Italy's reward for topping Pool A is a Round of 16 clash against Denmark in Turin, keeping them on home soil as they chart a course toward the Final Four.[1]

While Italy stayed perfect, the other three pool winners—Poland, Belgium, and France—all finished with formidable 4-1 records. France, in particular, looked revitalized after a disappointing 10th-place finish in this summer's Volleyball Nations League (VNL). They swept through most of Pool D before dropping a final match to Romania, signaling they are back in major-tournament form.[2]

Over in Sofia, the Bulgarian hosts rode a wave of massive home support to a 4-1 record of their own, tying Poland atop Pool B. The Bulgarian Volleyball Federation reported the tournament's highest average attendance at 10,862 fans per match. That local energy peaked at a staggering 13,186 spectators during their 3-2 victory over the top-ranked Poles on September 16.[3]

That raucous Sofia crowd was treated to a spectacular group stage from Bulgarian star Aleksandar Nikolov. The young outside hitter emerged as the tournament's top scorer through the preliminary phase, racking up 117 total points. His offensive dominance included a tournament-best 103 spiking points, edging out the Netherlands' Silvester Meijs, who finished with 99 points.[6]

The group stage was not without its brutal casualties. Türkiye, fresh off a historic run to the VNL Finals earlier this year, crashed out of Pool D with a dismal 1-4 record. Their campaign was derailed by a severe injury crisis that sidelined key attackers Adis Lagumdžija and Bedirhan Bülbül before the tournament even began, with more players falling during the week.[2]

The margin for error is now officially zero. The surviving 16 teams face a gauntlet of single-elimination matches this week, with the ultimate goal of reaching the Unipol Forum in Assago, Milan. The semifinals are set for September 25, followed by the gold and bronze medal matches on September 26. The road to LA 2028 runs straight through Milan.[4][5]
