Crystal Palace Look to Exploit Depleted Lyon in Europa League Clash

Bookmakers and oddsmakers have installed Olympique Lyonnais as the clear favorites to take all three points at Groupama Stadium on Thursday, leaning heavily on the French club's formidable home record in European competition. But the underlying metrics and recent form guide tell a starkly different story ahead of this Europa League Matchday 2 fixture.[2][4]
While Paulo Fonseca's Lyon stumbled to a 2-1 domestic defeat against RC Lens on Friday to snap a five-match unbeaten run, Crystal Palace arrive in France carrying significant momentum. The Eagles dispatched Nottingham Forest 3-1 in the Premier League on Sunday and have lost just one of their last 12 European outings.[2][3]
Both clubs opened their newly expanded Europa League phase campaigns with crucial victories last month. Lyon secured a hard-fought 2-1 away win at Anderlecht behind goals from Noah Nartey and Keito Nakamura, while Palace hammered Lech Poznań 4-0 at Selhurst Park to immediately claim a spot near the top of the standings.[3][5]
The London club is competing in the Europa League proper after lifting the 2025/26 UEFA Conference League trophy. That continental triumph followed a controversial UEFA ruling last season that demoted Palace to the third-tier competition due to American businessman John Textor's dual ownership stakes in both Palace and Lyon.[3]
The fixture also marks an emotional return for Palace manager Pierre Sage, who managed Lyon before taking over the Eagles. "I must say I feel a little bit that part of me is still in Lyon," Sage told reporters on Wednesday. "I still have a house here... So for me, it's a special moment."[1]
His counterpart is equally eager for the tactical battle. "It's always a pleasure," Fonseca said of facing Sage's setup. "I really enjoy matches that offer genuine tactical challenges. I like watching Pierre's teams and what he puts in place. These are matches that motivate me enormously."[1]
Injuries will force significant tactical reshuffles for both managers ahead of kickoff. Lyon must navigate the absence of star forward Loïs Openda, who suffered a leg injury against Lens, as well as missing full-back Nicolas Tagliafico.[2]
Fonseca is expected to hand Nakamura a starting role on the left flank to replace Openda's attacking output. The hosts will rely heavily on veteran midfielder Corentin Tolisso, who already leads the squad with four assists this season, to dictate the tempo against a physical Premier League midfield.[2]
Sage faces his own severe selection headaches, traveling without starting goalkeeper Dean Henderson and talismanic striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, who is recovering from a hamstring issue. Defenders Takehiro Tomiyasu and Chadi Riad also remain in the treatment room.[1][2]
Walter Benítez is confirmed to start between the posts for the visitors, while summer signing Jørgen Strand Larsen will lead the line. The Norwegian forward will be supported by Daichi Kamada and Yeremy Pino, both of whom found the back of the net in Sunday's domestic victory.[2]
Despite the defensive absences on both sides, the fixture projects as a high-scoring affair. Four of Lyon's five European matches this term have seen both teams score, and the French side has netted at least twice in six of their last seven home games in the competition.[3][4]
Palace have matched that prolific output, scoring 12 goals across their last five competitive fixtures. A second consecutive victory would put either side in a commanding position to bypass the knockout playoffs and secure direct entry to the round of 16. Kickoff in Lyon is scheduled for 18:45 local time.[4][5]
