The Western Conference playoff race tilted on a single deflection Thursday night at Lumen Field. In the 90th minute of a deadlocked match, Seattle Sounders midfielder Cristian Roldan pounced on a misplayed clearance to bury the game-winning goal, sealing a 2-1 victory over Sporting Kansas City.[1]
The late strike extended Seattle's unbeaten run to eight matches and vaulted them into seventh place. For a club that sat below the playoff line just weeks ago, securing nine points from a three-match homestand marks a massive turnaround in their 2026 campaign.[2]
On the opposite sideline, the late collapse delivered another brutal blow to Sporting Kansas City. The visitors had controlled large stretches of the match and generated 11 shots on target, forcing Seattle goalkeeper Andrew Thomas into a season-high nine saves.[3]
"We were very unlucky to lose here in the 90th minute," Sporting KC head coach Raphael Wicky told reporters after the final whistle. "It was very unlucky that we leave here away with zero points. That hurts of course, but I think our last four or five performances are going in the right direction."[4]
The visitors initially seized control just before halftime through their club-record summer signing. In the 44th minute, Stephen Afrifa blocked a Seattle clearance attempt deep in the Sounders' defensive third, sending the loose ball directly into the path of André Luiz.[3]
The Brazilian forward needed only a quick touch to set himself before blasting a left-footed strike into the top corner. The goal gave Sporting a 1-0 lead and marked Luiz's fifth tally in his last four appearances since arriving from Olympiacos.[3][4]
Seattle emerged from the locker room with renewed urgency, leveling the match just six minutes into the second half. Jordan Morris chased down a long ball from Roldan, holding off his defender before slipping a pass to a trailing Sebastian Gomez.[4]
Gomez, a 20-year-old homegrown talent who joined the Sounders academy at age 11, fired a one-touch finish past goalkeeper Stefan Cleveland. The 51st-minute strike was the first regular-season MLS goal of Gomez's young career, instantly shifting the momentum inside Lumen Field.[2][3]
The ensuing 40 minutes devolved into a physical, end-to-end grind. Sporting Kansas City created multiple chances to reclaim the lead, including a dangerous effort from Taylor Calheira that required a sprawling intervention from Thomas to keep the score level.[5]
That crucial save set the stage for Roldan's late heroics. As Morris played a through ball on a counterattack in the final moments, Sporting defender Wyatt Meyer attempted to clear the danger, but the ball deflected perfectly for Roldan to redirect into the net.[2]
Seattle now takes a 10-9-8 record on the road, traveling to face the New England Revolution on October 10. Sporting Kansas City, mired at the bottom of the Western Conference at 6-18-3, must regroup as they search for defensive stability in the season's final stretch.[2][3]
The result underscores a dramatic mid-season correction for the Sounders, who have not lost a match since mid-August. By flipping a halftime deficit into three points, Seattle proved they possess the late-game resilience required for a deep postseason run.[5]
