The outcome of Sunday’s Serie A clash at the Unipol Domus was determined entirely by the positioning of Cagliari goalkeeper Elia Caprile. Facing a relentless Juventus attack that generated 22 shots and 1.92 expected goals, Caprile produced nine saves to dictate the 1-1 draw. His performance turned what should have been a routine away victory into a frustrating stalemate for Luciano Spalletti’s squad.[2]
Juventus controlled the territory from the opening whistle, holding 72 percent possession and completing 780 passes to Cagliari’s 340. Yet it was the hosts who struck first through a clinical transition in the 20th minute. Paul Mendy threaded a pass into the left channel for Daniel Maldini, who drove a left-footed finish into the bottom-right corner.[2]
Maldini’s strike marked his fourth consecutive league match with a goal, maximizing a rare Cagliari foray that carried an expected goals value of just 0.44. Juventus spent the remainder of the first half probing a disciplined defensive block. Pape Matar Sarr dictated the tempo from midfield, logging 149 touches and completing 133 of 136 passes, but the visitors struggled to convert their 112 final-third entries into clear chances.[2]
Spalletti overhauled his attack at the break, introducing Edon Zhegrova and Kerim Alajbegovic to stretch the pitch. Zhegrova immediately tested Caprile, firing six shots in the second half and forcing a spectacular flying save near the hour mark. The tactical shift pinned Cagliari deeper, resulting in 51 Juventus touches inside the opposition penalty area compared to just four for the hosts.[2][3]
"It’s a shame about the result because we had chances to score and we should have taken all three points from this match," Juventus striker Randal Kolo Muani told the club's official website. "At half-time, the manager asked us to get the ball into the penalty area more often to put our opponents under pressure."[1]
That pressure finally fractured Caprile’s resistance in the 81st minute. Alajbegovic delivered a measured cross from the left flank, finding Kolo Muani at the back post. The French forward slipped ahead of defender Adam Obert to glance a header into the net, securing his first Serie A goal since returning to the club in the summer of 2026.
Despite a frantic final ten minutes, Juventus could not find a winner, leaving them with just four points from a possible nine on the road this season. The frustration boiled over at the final whistle, with Spalletti and Cagliari manager Fabio Pisacane both receiving red cards following a heated touchline altercation during their customary post-match handshake.
The hard-fought draw lifts Cagliari to fourth place in the table with 13 points, continuing their surprising start to the 2026 campaign under Pisacane. Juventus, meanwhile, sit sixth with 11 points, trailing league leaders Inter Milan as they search for a tactical solution to their mounting away-form struggles.[3]
