All Blacks Fly-Half Crisis Deepens as Mo'unga and Love Ruled Out of Bledisloe Cup

New Zealand faces a severe playmaker shortage ahead of the Bledisloe Cup after Richie Mo'unga suffered a calf tear and Ruben Love was ruled out for the rest of 2026. Meanwhile, Australia's Maya Stewart returns for the Wallaroos, and Springbok Cheslin Kolbe shares a positive update on his broken jaw.

The All Blacks' depth at fly-half has been severely compromised just days before the Bledisloe Cup, with Richie Mo'unga and Ruben Love both ruled out of the upcoming series against Australia. The double blow leaves New Zealand scrambling to reconfigure their backline ahead of Saturday's opener at Eden Park.[1][2]

Mo'unga sustained a calf tear during a training session on Tuesday, effectively halting his highly anticipated return to the international fold. New Zealand Rugby confirmed the injury via scans, leaving head coach Dave Rennie without his most experienced playmaker. A return-to-play timeline has not yet been established.[3][4]

The crisis compounds the devastating loss of Ruben Love, who requires season-ending surgery for an ankle ligament injury. Love had steered the Hurricanes to a Super Rugby Pacific title and started six Tests this year before suffering the injury during the Rugby's Greatest Rivalry series in South Africa.[2][7]

Rennie acknowledged the physical toll Love had endured throughout a breakout 2026 campaign. "He sort of nursed it a little bit through Super Rugby. He's tough, Ruben," Rennie said, confirming the 25-year-old will miss both the Bledisloe Cup and the end-of-year Nations Championship Tests in Europe.[2]

Key injuries impacting the All Blacks squad ahead of the Bledisloe Cup.

All Blacks Backline Reshuffle

With both primary options sidelined, uncapped playmaker Josh Jacomb could be handed the starting No. 10 jersey against the Wallabies. Beauden Barrett and Damian McKenzie remain in the squad to provide veteran cover, but the timing leaves Rennie with a significant tactical headache against a resurgent Australian side.[2][4]

The All Blacks' wider backline took a further hit with winger Fehi Fineanganofo stood down from the squad. Fineanganofo suffered a concussion and an upper hamstring strain while playing for Bay of Plenty in the NPC, triggering a mandatory 12-day stand-down period under World Rugby protocols.[1][4]

Uncapped Crusaders outside back Chay Fihaki has been called into the squad as Fineanganofo's replacement. The mounting casualty list adds to the physical toll of New Zealand's bruising four-match tour of South Africa, which already sidelined Ardie Savea, Luke Jacobson, and Caleb Clarke.[1][4]

Kolbe's Jaw Recovery Progress

Elsewhere in the international arena, Springbok star Cheslin Kolbe provided an encouraging update on his broken jaw. The dynamic winger fractured his jaw during South Africa's 29-24 victory over the All Blacks on September 5, forcing him from the field inside the opening 10 minutes at FNB Stadium.[5]

Marking exactly one month since the injury, Kolbe confirmed his steady progress on social media. "Half way there before I can finally chew a steak," he wrote to his supporters. "Cannot wait to be back on the field again! 1 month in. God is in control."[5]

Springbok winger Cheslin Kolbe is halfway through his recovery from a broken jaw.

While Kolbe did not provide a specific return date, his recovery trajectory suggests he could be available for South Africa's end-of-year fixtures. Springbok head coach Rassie Erasmus had previously noted Kolbe's absence during the subsequent Test in Baltimore, but the squad has managed to maintain its momentum.[5]

Stewart Boosts Wallaroos

On a positive note for Australian rugby, prolific try-scorer Maya Stewart has been recalled to the Wallaroos squad. Stewart missed the European leg of the WXV Global Series due to an Achilles injury but has now made a full recovery, providing a timely boost of wide-channel experience.[6]

Stewart will be available for the final two Test matches of the season against Scotland in Sydney on October 17 and Canberra on October 23. The 26-year-old replaces Piper Flynn in the updated 30-player squad, joining a team eager to capitalize on home advantage.[6]

Former Wallaroos captain Shannon Parry has also joined the coaching staff as an assistant for the historic quadruple-header at Accor Stadium. Parry, who played 24 Tests for Australia, brings vital leadership experience to a squad navigating its own transitional phase.[6]

As the international window intensifies, squad depth and medical resilience are proving to be the decisive factors. While Australia and South Africa welcome back crucial wide threats, New Zealand must navigate a high-stakes Bledisloe Cup opener with a makeshift midfield.[1][5][6]
