A New Format and a Group of Death: Previewing the 2026 Euro Hockey League Men's Round 1

Twelve clubs from across the continent converge on Eindhoven next week as the Euro Hockey League debuts its new round-robin Round 1 format. With only four tickets to the FINAL12 at stake, host club HC Oranje-Rood faces a brutal path through the group of death.

The wait is over. On October 9, the pinnacle of European men's club field hockey returns to Eindhoven as HC Oranje-Rood hosts the ABN AMRO Euro Hockey League Men's Round 1. Twelve clubs from 11 different nations will battle over three days, but only four will survive the weekend.[3]

This season marks a massive structural shift for the 20th edition of the EHL. The traditional October KO16 knockout bracket is gone. In its place, the European Hockey Federation has introduced a round-robin format featuring four pools of three teams, with only the group winners advancing to the expanded FINAL12 next April.[2]

"We are incredibly proud that the Euro Hockey League is returning to Eindhoven," HC Oranje-Rood chairperson Birgit Slaats told the EHL. "Hosting Europe's premier club hockey event is both an honour and a responsibility." The Charles Roelslaan venue previously hosted the 2019 Grand Final.

The local government has thrown its full weight behind the tournament. Nienke Nijenhuis, Managing Director of BrabantSport, emphasized the regional impact. "The decision to bring the Euro Hockey League ROUND1 to Eindhoven this October is fantastic news for both the region and Dutch hockey," she stated.

The 12 competing clubs are divided into four pools, with only the group winners advancing.

The new format leaves zero margin for error. A single draw or sluggish start could eliminate a title contender before the Easter showpiece even comes into view. The stakes are highest in Pool C, which analysts have already dubbed the group of death.[1]

The Group of Death

Pool C pits the host club against two continental heavyweights: Spanish giants Real Club de Polo de Barcelona and England's Wimbledon HC. Oranje-Rood and Wimbledon share a fierce history, having clashed in an unforgettable 2017 FINAL4 battle.[1]

The Dutch hosts will rely heavily on their raucous home support to navigate the gauntlet. Real Club de Polo arrives with a stacked roster and immense domestic form, while Wimbledon brings a physical, high-pressing style that historically disrupts Dutch possession play.[1]

"Oranje-Rood is one of the iconic Euro Hockey League clubs and so it is wonderful to return to Eindhoven to begin the 20th EHL season," EHL Chairman Peter Elders noted. The home side will need every bit of that iconic pedigree to survive Sunday's decisive fixtures.

Over in Pool B, four-time EHL finalists and 2017 champions Rot-Weiss Köln make their return to the competition. The German powerhouse is heavily favored to advance, but they face a tricky opening test against Czech side SK Slavia Prague and a dangerous newcomer.[1]

Set pieces like the penalty corner will be decisive in the unforgiving three-team pool format.

Historic Debuts and Underdog Dreams

Belgian side Royal Orée faces a massive baptism of fire in Pool B. Making their first-ever EHL appearance, the Brussels-based club must find a way to neutralize Rot-Weiss Köln's lethal penalty corner routines if they hope to shock the establishment.[1]

Pool A offers a completely different dynamic, presenting a golden opportunity for an underdog to reach the FINAL12. SV Arminen of Austria, France's Lille MHC, and Scottish debutants Edinburgh University MHC will all view this group as highly winnable.[1]

For Edinburgh University, Friday's opening match against Lille represents a milestone 125 years in the making. The Scottish university side has built a formidable domestic program, and their EHL debut is a testament to the growing depth of British university hockey.[4]

Finally, Pool D features a fascinating tactical clash between Ireland's Lisnagarvey HC, French side CAM92, and Swiss outfit HC Rotweiss Wettingen. Lisnagarvey brings a relentless, fast-breaking Irish style that will test the structured defensive setups of their continental opponents.[1]

The four pool winners from Eindhoven will join eight seeded clubs at the Easter FINAL12.

The eight teams waiting in the FINAL12 have already earned their byes through domestic dominance. Defending EHL champions SV Kampong and Dutch rivals AH&BC Amsterdam are among the heavyweights resting until April, reflecting the immense strength of the Dutch Tulp Hoofdklasse.[1][2]

The action kicks off Friday afternoon when Edinburgh takes the pitch against Lille. By Sunday evening, the European club hierarchy will be set, and the four pool winners will punch their tickets to join the continent's elite at the Easter FINAL12.[3]
