The summer amateur golf season has reached its crescendo, and the race for the Mark H. McCormack Medal—awarded to the world's top-ranked amateur—is facing a chaotic final calculation. Following the conclusion of the 126th U.S. Amateur at Merion Golf Club on Sunday, the men's World Amateur Golf Ranking (WAGR) is bracing for a seismic points shift.[4][6]
For the men, the McCormack Medal is awarded to the No. 1 player in the WAGR the week following the U.S. Amateur or European Amateur, whichever concludes last. The stakes are immense: the winner receives automatic exemptions into the 2027 U.S. Open at Pebble Beach and The Open Championship at St Andrews.[2][6]
Heading into Merion, Preston Stout held a precarious grip on the No. 1 ranking. However, the grueling stroke-play portion of the U.S. Amateur proved disastrous for the top of the standings. Stout, the 2026 NCAA stroke-play champion, shot 6-over-par to miss the match-play playoff by four strokes.[4]
Stout was far from the only WAGR heavyweight to stumble. In total, nine players ranked inside the WAGR top 20 failed to advance to match play. That casualty list included No. 5 Luke Poulter, No. 9 Ethan Fang, and No. 10 Tim Wiedemeyer, blowing the points race wide open just as the divisor calculations enter their final week.[4]
While the top seeds faltered, surging players capitalized on the elevated points available at the season's premier event. England's Jack Whaley, who entered the week ranked No. 90 in the world, captured the Havemeyer Trophy with a dominant 4&3 victory in the 36-hole final.[2][5]
Whaley defeated Stanford's Jay Leng Jr., the No. 23 player in the WAGR, securing his own exemptions into the Masters, U.S. Open, and The Open. "It shows I can compete with the best," Leng noted after his runner-up finish, which will vault him significantly higher in the upcoming rankings update.[2]
While the men's race awaits the final math, the women's WAGR standings have officially crowned their champion. The USGA and R&A announced that Kiara Romero has secured the women's McCormack Medal for the second consecutive year.[3][6]
Romero, a University of Oregon standout, held off Spain's Paula Martín Sampedro to retain the No. 1 spot following the conclusion of the U.S. Women's Amateur. "I think these last few years I've just been playing really well, enjoying stress-free golf and having fun out there," Romero said, noting that her low-amateur finish at the U.S. Women's Open was a season highlight.[3]
Further down the women's standings, 17-year-old Asterisk Talley engineered the summer's most dramatic climb. Following a runaway 8&6 victory at the U.S. Women's Amateur at The Honors Course, Talley vaulted to a career-best No. 7 in the world.[1]
Talley's surge cements her status as one of the game's brightest rising stars, adding a marquee individual title to a resume that already included runner-up finishes at the 2024 U.S. Women's Amateur and the 2025 Augusta National Women's Amateur.[1]
The final WAGR update of the summer will be published on Wednesday, officially locking in the men's McCormack Medal winner. Beyond the major exemptions, these final standings will heavily influence the Global Amateur Pathway and PGA Tour University rankings, dictating which players receive direct access to professional tours in 2027.[3][6]
