USA Wrestling Grants Medical Delays to Three World Medalists Ahead of Final X

Three of the United States' top freestyle wrestlers will receive crucial time to heal ahead of their World Team qualifying matches. Real Woods, Kylie Welker, and Kennedy Blades—all bronze medalists at the 2025 Senior World Championships—have officially requested and received medical delays for their upcoming Final X wrestle-offs.[1][4]

The delays trigger a unique athlete-protection clause in USA Wrestling's rulebook. Rather than forcing injured athletes to forfeit their hard-earned spots on the national team, the governing body permits returning World medalists to postpone their best-of-three series if they can provide certified medical documentation at least 48 hours before weigh-ins.[1]

The most severe of the three disclosed injuries belongs to Real Woods, who competes in the 65 kg men's freestyle division. Woods was hospitalized just days before the event with a severe, antibiotic-resistant knee infection. In a public statement, the 2023 NCAA finalist expressed his frustration but acknowledged the necessity of the delay, noting that he needed to prioritize his health to give the fans and Team USA the version of himself they deserve.[2]

Woods was originally scheduled to face rising star Bo Bassett, who earned his spot at Final X by winning the 2026 U.S. Open. Because of the delay, Bassett will now have to adjust his training cycle and wait for a rescheduled date to challenge Woods for the 65 kg spot.[1][2][4]

On the women's freestyle side, both Kylie Welker (76 kg) and Kennedy Blades (68 kg) also invoked the medical delay protocol. Welker was slated to wrestle Dymond Guilford, while Blades was scheduled to face Bella Mir. News of Welker's postponement first surfaced over the weekend via an Instagram post from Guilford, before USA Wrestling officially confirmed the roster changes.[1][2]

Final X, presented by Kerberos Capital Management, serves as USA Wrestling's flagship Senior-level event. Scheduled for June 19 at the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey, the event determines the U.S. roster for the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan. While the three delayed series will not take place in Newark, the rest of the 17 weight classes will proceed as planned on two elevated mats inside the arena.[4][5]

The medical delay provision is widely praised within the wrestling community as a vital safeguard for athlete welfare. In a grueling combat sport where peaking for a specific date often leads to overtraining and vulnerability to infection or joint damage, the rule ensures that a freak injury in June does not erase an athlete's entire year of preparation.[3][6]

To prevent abuse of the system, the rule is strictly limited. Only athletes who medaled at the previous year's World Championships—and thus earned an automatic berth into Final X—are eligible to request the extension. Challengers who qualified through the U.S. Open or the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament do not have the same luxury.[1][4]

USA Wrestling has not yet announced the rescheduled dates for the Woods-Bassett, Welker-Guilford, and Blades-Mir series. According to the organization's procedures, the national coach and the athletes involved must mutually agree on a new date and location. If an agreement cannot be reached, the sport-specific committee will mandate the logistics.[1][2]

The only hard deadline is that all delayed wrestle-offs must be completed before the U.S. team departs for the 2026 World Team Acclimation Camp later this summer. Until then, Woods, Welker, and Blades will focus on rehabilitation, while their challengers return to the practice room to maintain their competitive edge.[1]
