Achieving high repairability scores while maintaining the sleek, waterproof designs that consumers demand requires advanced engineering and novel materials. Adhesive companies are developing specialized tapes that maintain strong waterproof seals but release cleanly when exposed to specific heat or voltage triggers, allowing repair technicians to open devices without shattering glass panels.

The ripple effects of the EU's smartphone regulations are already spreading to other product categories. The Ecodesign for Sustainable Products Regulation (ESPR) framework is designed to be horizontal, meaning the principles established for mobile devices will soon be applied elsewhere. Laptops, monitors, and small household appliances are next in line for mandatory repairability scores and extended spare parts guarantees.[2]

Because it is highly inefficient to design one modular, repairable phone for Europe and a sealed, disposable phone for the rest of the world, the EU's standards are effectively becoming global standards.
