Ten-Man Lyon Survives Late VAR Drama to Beat Nice 2-1 and Top Ligue 1

Ask the Nice dressing room what happened at Groupama Stadium, and they will tell you they were robbed by the margins. They dominated the second half, rattled the woodwork, and saw a stoppage-time equalizer erased by a millimeter-tight VAR offside call against a ten-man opponent.[2][6]

Ask the Lyon camp, and Sunday’s 2-1 victory was the exact kind of gritty, backs-to-the-wall stand that wins championships. They overturned an early deficit with a ruthless four-minute blitz, defended their box with frantic conviction after Keito Nakamura’s 70th-minute red card, and vaulted to the top of Ligue 1.[1][2]

The visitors actually drew first blood in the 18th minute with a classic wing-to-box sequence. Jonathan Clauss bent a measured cross from the right flank, and Ivorian forward Elye Wahi arrived perfectly to steer a low finish past Rémy Descamps for his second goal of the season.[1][2]

Lyon refused to stew in the deficit, answering with a sudden surge of pressure that flipped the match before halftime. In the 32nd minute, Pavel Šulc reacted fastest to a rebound off goalkeeper Yehvann Diouf, prodding home the equalizer from close range.[1][6]

Four minutes later, the hosts struck the decisive blow from a set-piece phase. Swiss international Zachary Athekame delivered a teasing, curled cross into the area, and American midfielder Tanner Tessmann powered a header past Diouf to net his first-ever Ligue 1 goal.[1][2][6]

The first half belonged entirely to Paulo Fonseca’s men, who monopolized 60 percent of possession and logged 59 final-third entries to Nice's 12. They suffocated the visitors with a high press, winning individual duels and converting their only two big chances of the opening frame.[2]

The momentum violently shifted after the interval as Nice seized control of the territory and tempo. The visitors owned 66 percent of the second-half possession, out-shot Lyon 11-1, and forced eight corners while pinning the hosts deep in their own half.[2]

The pressure compounded in the 70th minute when Lyon was reduced to ten men. Nakamura was shown a straight red card for a high-footed challenge on Egyptian defender Mohamed Abdelmonem, leaving the hosts to survive the final 20 minutes with a numerical disadvantage.[1][4]

Nice immediately capitalized on the extra space, nearly finding a breakthrough in the 74th minute when Wahi met a cross and crashed a header against the post. Lyon dug in, racking up 30 second-half clearances as Descamps made three crucial saves to preserve the narrow lead.[1][2]

The climax arrived deep in stoppage time when Wahi finally put the ball in the net, sparking wild celebrations from the away bench. The joy was instantly extinguished by the VAR booth, which ruled the striker marginally offside to confirm Lyon's survival.[1][5][6]

The result fundamentally reshapes the top of the French table, leaving five teams deadlocked on 14 points after previous pacesetter Monaco fell to Lorient. Lyon now sits at the summit on goal difference, setting up a massive Matchday 8 showdown against defending champion Paris Saint-Germain.[1][3]

“It's good to be top, but it's not the most important thing,” said Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca. “But having 14 points is very positive. Of course, that gives us confidence and greater responsibilities, but at this stage of the season it changes nothing.”[3]
