Nintendo Announces Two-Day Direct Event for Zelda's 40th Anniversary and Switch 2 Winter Lineup

Nintendo holds the keys to the holiday gaming calendar, and the publisher has decided to use them all at once. In a rare scheduling move, the company has carved out a two-day broadcast event for September 8 and 9, giving itself a massive 75-minute window to detail the Switch 2's winter lineup and finally celebrate the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda.[2][3]

The specifics of the schedule point to a dense week of reveals. On Tuesday, September 8 at 10 a.m. ET, Nintendo will air a 30-minute presentation dedicated entirely to the Zelda franchise. The following day, Wednesday, September 9 at 10 a.m. ET, brings a 45-minute general Nintendo Direct.[1][4]

According to the official announcement, the Wednesday broadcast will focus on "Nintendo Switch 2 games launching this winter." A Nintendo Treehouse: Live stream will immediately follow the Wednesday presentation, offering deep-dive, unedited gameplay of the newly showcased titles.[1][5]

The split format is highly unusual for the Kyoto-based publisher. Typically, Nintendo bundles its September announcements into a single 40-to-50-minute show. By separating Zelda into its own 30-minute block, the company is signaling that the 40th-anniversary plans are simply too vast to share the stage with the rest of the winter slate.[6]

The centerpiece of the Tuesday broadcast is widely expected to be the full reveal of the Ocarina of Time remake. Nintendo formally announced the Switch 2 project back in June 2026 with only a few seconds of footage, leaving fans to speculate on whether the game is a faithful visual upgrade or a ground-up reimagining.[1][4]
