Deep within the Leang Karampuang limestone cave on the Indonesian island of Sulawesi, a faded reddish painting of a wild pig and three human-like figures has fundamentally rewritten the timeline of human cognition. For decades, the archaeological consensus held that complex narrative art—scenes depicting interaction rather than isolated figures—originated in Europe during the Late Pleistocene, roughly 20,000 to 30,000 years ago. The Sulawesi discovery shatters this Eurocentric timeline, proving that early humans in Southeast Asia were communicating through complex visual media tens of thousands of years earlier.[1][2]
Published in the journal Nature, an international team of researchers has definitively dated the artwork to at least 51,200 years ago. This makes it the oldest known figurative cave art in the world and, crucially, the earliest surviving evidence of visual storytelling. The previous record holder, a life-sized picture of a wild pig found in a nearby cave, was dated to 45,500 years ago. The new finding pushes the dawn of narrative expression back by nearly six millennia.[1][3]
The artwork itself is a dynamic, deliberate composition. The panel features a large warty pig, a species native to Sulawesi known as Sus celebensis, surrounded by three smaller figures. These figures are interpreted by archaeologists as "therianthropes"—part-human, part-animal beings. The positioning of the figures strongly suggests a cohesive scene rather than a random assortment of doodles.[1][2]
One of the therianthrope figures appears to be holding an object near the pig's throat. Another hovers directly above the pig's head in an upside-down position with its legs splayed out, while the third reaches toward the animal. Lead researcher Adhi Agus Oktaviana, an Indonesian rock art specialist, argues that this is a clear narrative communicating a specific event, myth, or hunting strategy.[1][2][3]
Dating prehistoric rock art is notoriously difficult because the pigments themselves—often made from iron oxide or ochre—lack the organic material required for traditional radiocarbon dating. Instead, scientists must date the mineral crusts, known as "cave popcorn" or calcium carbonate, that naturally form over the art as water drips down the cave walls over millennia.[2][3]
Historically, archaeologists used a solution-based uranium-series technique to date these crusts. This involved physically scraping off chunks of the mineral and analyzing the radioactive decay of uranium into thorium. However, this blunt method often mixed older and younger layers of the mineral together, leading to an averaged and artificially young age estimate that failed to capture the true antiquity of the underlying paint.[1][2]
To solve this methodological bottleneck, the research team from Griffith University and Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) pioneered a breakthrough technique: Laser Ablation Uranium-series (LA-U-series) dating. Instead of scraping the rock, this technique uses a microscopic laser to vaporize microscopic cross-sections of the mineral crust.[1][2]

By analyzing layers thinner than a human hair, the LA-U-series method allows researchers to isolate the very first, oldest layer of calcium carbonate that formed directly on top of the pigment. This provides a highly accurate, high-resolution minimum age for the painting beneath it, ensuring that younger mineral deposits do not skew the data.[1][2]
The precision of the LA-U-series method is not just establishing new records; it is actively correcting old ones. The research team used the new laser technique to re-test a previously famous hunting scene at the nearby Leang Bulu' Sipong 4 cave. The new analysis pushed the age of that artwork from 43,900 years to at least 48,000 years old, confirming that the entire region was a thriving hub of early human artistic expression.[1]
The cognitive implications of the Leang Karampuang painting are profound. The presence of therianthropes is considered a smoking gun for advanced symbolic thought. Imagining a creature that does not exist in the natural world requires abstract cognition—a critical evolutionary leap that underpins the development of religion, mythology, and complex societal structures.[1][3]
Adam Brumm, an archaeologist at Griffith University and co-author of the study, suggests that storytelling was a crucial evolutionary tool for early humans. The ability to encode and transmit complex information through visual narratives likely contributed to the survival and global spread of Homo sapiens, allowing them to pass down knowledge across generations long before the invention of writing.[2][3][4]
Despite the precise dating of the mineral crusts, the interpretation of the scene as a single, cohesive "narrative" faces some academic scrutiny. Transparent uncertainty remains regarding the exact sequence of the painting. Some independent archaeologists caution that the human-like figures might not have been painted at the exact same time as the pig.[3]
Cave walls were frequently used as multi-generational canvases, creating a palimpsest effect. If the therianthropes were added hundreds or thousands of years after the pig was originally painted, the "story" might be a modern projection onto a composite image, rather than a cohesive narrative intended by a single Paleolithic artist.[3]
The Sulawesi dates have also reignited debates over contested European archaeological sites. Spanish researchers previously claimed that abstract art found in three caves in Spain was over 64,000 years old, controversially attributing the work to Neanderthals rather than modern humans.
However, the broader international scientific community has largely rejected those Spanish claims. Experts argue that the researchers in Spain failed to definitively prove that the dated limestone crusts actually formed on top of the pigment, rather than elsewhere on the rock. The rigorous LA-U-series method used in Indonesia now sets a new, demanding standard that the European sites have yet to meet.
The Maros-Pangkep karst region in Sulawesi contains hundreds of limestone caves, many of which hold undocumented or undated art. As the LA-U-series technique is applied more broadly across the region, archaeologists expect the timeline of human creativity to be pushed back even further.[1][2]
Ultimately, the Leang Karampuang discovery proves that the capacity for abstract thought and storytelling was not a late-stage development that occurred after humans settled in Europe. Instead, it was a fundamental trait that early humans likely carried with them as they migrated out of Africa, leaving their stories etched in stone across the globe.[3]
