The NCAA gymnastics transfer portal does not sleep, and the arms race for the 2027 national title just hit its final gear. Programs across the country have spent the last six months aggressively managing collegiate free agency, plugging lineup holes with battle-tested veterans. This week, the dust finally settled as several major programs locked in their finalized rosters.
LSU is not resting on its laurels after falling just short of the national championship in 2026. The Tigers officially announced a six-athlete incoming class on October 16, a haul headlined by three high-impact transfers who bring immediate scoring potential to Baton Rouge. Jordyn Lyden, Skyelar Kerico, and Ariel Posen represent a targeted strategy by the coaching staff to acquire proven collegiate routines.[1]
Lyden arrives in the fiercely competitive SEC with serious postseason pedigree. The Stillwater, Minnesota, native spent three standout seasons with the Golden Gophers, anchoring critical lineups during a historic 2026 campaign. She helped Minnesota advance to the NCAA Championship Final for the first time in program history, making her a plug-and-play asset for a Tigers squad chasing the ultimate prize.[1]
Kerico brings a completely different flavor of dominance to the LSU training gym. Transferring from Penn for her final season of eligibility, she leaves behind a legacy as one of the Gymnastics East Conference’s all-time greats. A two-time GEC Gymnast of the Year, Kerico earned First Team All-GEC honors on every single apparatus and in the all-around during her 2025 campaign.
The numbers back up Kerico’s extensive accolades. She shattered Penn’s program records, posting a massive 39.450 in the all-around and a 9.925 on vault. By pairing these seasoned transfers with elite four-star freshmen Malea Milton, Annalisa Milton, and Audree Valdenarro, LSU has engineered a roster built to withstand the grueling SEC gauntlet.
Mid-Majors Make Moves
The transfer frenzy is not limited to the traditional SEC powerhouses. Up in Philadelphia, Temple University made its own late-offseason splash, officially announcing the addition of Nebraska transfer Ahnna Kalmes on October 22. The move highlights how coaching connections are increasingly driving the gymnastics portal market, as athletes follow trusted mentors to new programs.[2]
Kalmes’ decision to join the Owls was directly tied to Temple’s interim head coach Brittney Miller. Miller, who carved out a decorated gymnastics career of her own at Nebraska, leveraged her Cornhusker roots to secure the commitment. For a Temple program looking to establish stability under an interim coach, landing a Big Ten talent is a massive statement of intent.[2]
“I chose Temple because of my connection with Brittney, who was a gymnast at Nebraska,” Kalmes said following the announcement. “Even before I committed to school there, we had an amazing connection. I felt Temple would be a place where I would feel valued as a gymnast and a person.”[2]
Kalmes, a redshirt freshman, noted that the transition involves far more than just learning new equipment. She immediately integrated into the campus culture, joining the National Student Transfer Week planning committee. Her move underscores the reality that modern collegiate gymnasts are actively seeking environments that support their holistic development, not just their athletic output.[2]
A Chaotic Offseason Concludes
These October finalizations cap off one of the most chaotic offseasons in recent NCAA gymnastics history. The portal has fundamentally altered how teams are constructed, creating a fluid talent economy where a single veteran routine can swing a regional championship. Earlier this summer, the landscape shifted dramatically when multi-time All-American Joscelyn Roberson transferred from Arkansas to Georgia.[3]
Roberson’s move to Athens reunited her with former elite coaches Cécile and Laurent Landi, setting off a chain reaction across the conference. Auburn countered by hiring Ryan Roberts away from Georgia, while Arkansas promoted Chris Brooks to head coach. Every coaching hire and roster addition has been a calculated bet on the 2027 postseason.
With the winter preseason now looming, the window for roster tinkering is officially shut. The athletes are on campus, the lineups are being tested in intrasquad meets, and the theoretical strength of these transfer classes will soon meet the reality of live judging. For LSU, Temple, and the rest of the NCAA, the stakes have never been higher.[2]
