Litton Das Cleared for First Test Against Australia in Major Boost for Injury-Hit Bangladesh

Bangladesh's preparations for their first Test tour of Australia in 23 years received a massive lift this weekend, as veteran wicketkeeper-batter Litton Das was officially cleared to join the squad for the series opener in Darwin.[1][2]

Das had been sidelined since June after sustaining a grade-1 left calf muscle injury during a home ODI series against Australia. The lingering issue forced him to miss the subsequent T20I leg of that tour, as well as Bangladesh's all-format trip to Zimbabwe in July.[1][3][5][6]

When the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) announced its initial 15-man Test squad on July 26, Das was a notable omission. Medical staff originally projected that the 31-year-old would not be ready for the rigors of five-day cricket until the second Test in Mackay, scheduled for late August.[1][2][3][4]

However, after undergoing platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy in Singapore and completing a rigorous rehabilitation program, Das's recovery accelerated significantly. BCB officials confirmed that he passed all necessary fitness assessments and has resumed batting and running without discomfort.[1][4][7]

"The 31-year-old batsman has been sidelined since June due to the injury, but has responded well to his rehabilitation programme and will be in consideration for selection for the opening Test," the BCB said in a statement.[2][6]

Das's return is a crucial stabilizing factor for a Bangladesh side that has been ravaged by injuries, particularly in its fast-bowling department. The team is already grappling with the loss of sheer pace ahead of a challenging assignment on hard, bouncy Australian pitches.[4][5]

Express fast bowler Nahid Rana, who regularly clocks speeds above 150 km/h, has been ruled out of the entire series. Rana suffered a grade-2 left side strain during the T20I series against Zimbabwe and requires at least six to eight weeks of recovery time before he can resume his bowling workload.[4][5]

Right-arm quick Tanzim Hasan Sakib is also unavailable as he continues to rehabilitate a hip bone injury, with his return to competitive cricket not expected until late in the year.[2][4]

There is, however, cautious optimism regarding left-arm pacer Shoriful Islam. Shoriful sustained a grade-1 hamstring injury in Zimbabwe but has recently resumed his bowling program. While he will miss the first Test in Darwin, the BCB hopes he will pass a final fitness test on August 12 to be available for the second match.[1][2][4]

The inclusion of Das brings more than just batting pedigree; it adds vital leadership experience to the touring party. Just days before his medical clearance, Das was appointed as Bangladesh's new ODI captain, replacing Mehidy Hasan Miraz as the team builds toward the 2027 World Cup.[5]

He was Bangladesh's standout performer in his last Test appearance, scoring 126 and 69 to help secure a 72-run victory over Pakistan in Sylhet. His presence in the middle order will be heavily relied upon against a formidable Australian attack featuring Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood, and Nathan Lyon.[4][6]

Despite the depleted pace stocks, Australian head coach Andrew McDonald has warned his side against complacency. He noted that Bangladesh has developed significant fast-bowling depth over the past two years, emerging as one of the most potent pace attacks in Test cricket even without their frontline stars.[4]

The two-match series, which begins with a warm-up game against a Cricket Australia XI on August 6, carries significant weight in the ICC World Test Championship standings. Australia currently leads the table, while Bangladesh sits in the top half, eager to prove their mettle and secure crucial points in unfamiliar conditions.[2][6][7]
