Global Wrestling Standings: Iran's Greco-Roman Squad Dominates UWW Rankings Ahead of Astana World Championships

The United World Wrestling (UWW) has released its final August 2026 global standings, and the Greco-Roman team race is shaping up to be a one-nation powerhouse display. Iran has placed an astonishing seven wrestlers in the top four of their respective weight classes, cementing their status as the prohibitive favorites ahead of the 2026 Senior World Championships in Astana, Kazakhstan.[1]

The updated standings aggregate points from the 2026 Ranking Series, continental championships, and previous world results. Iran's depth is most evident in the upper weights, where Olympic and world champion Mohammad Hadi Saravi holds the No. 3 spot globally at 97kg, and reigning world champion Amin Mirzazadeh sits at No. 2 at 130kg.

However, the standings also highlight the fierce internal domestic battles that will reshape the World Championship brackets. Despite Mirzazadeh's No. 2 global ranking, the reigning champion was recently upset by rising star Fardin Hedayati in a 5-1 decision during Iran's national selection series. Hedayati will now represent Iran at 130kg in Astana, taking over the spot of the defending champion and adding a fresh dynamic to the heavyweight division.

The lower and middle weights are equally packed with Iranian talent. Payam Ahmadi, who dominated the Ulaanbaatar Open Ranking Series in June without conceding a single point, is ranked No. 3 at 55kg. He is joined in the upper echelon by Mohammad Keshtkar (63kg), Saeid Esmaeili (67kg), Seyed Danial Sohrabi (72kg), and Alireza Mohmadi (87kg), all of whom sit at No. 4 globally in their respective divisions.

Iran's wire-to-wire dominance in the 2026 standings began early in the season. At the first UWW Ranking Series event in Zagreb, Croatia, the Iranian Greco-Roman squad captured the team title with 125 points, narrowly edging out Uzbekistan (120 points) and Kazakhstan (108 points). Gold medal performances by Mohammad Panahisani (55kg) and Ali Oskou (77kg) set the tone for the year.[2]

The UWW's team scoring methodology heavily rewards nations with top-tier depth across multiple weight classes, awarding 25 points for a gold medal, 20 for silver, and 15 for bronze. With seven athletes seeded in the top four, Iran is mathematically positioned to run away with the team title in Astana, provided their wrestlers perform to their seeds.[3]

The 2026 Senior World Championships, scheduled for October 24 to November 1 at the Barys Arena in Astana, will serve as the ultimate proving ground. The tournament was relocated to Kazakhstan from Manama, Bahrain, due to regional security concerns, but the venue change has done little to disrupt the preparation of the top-ranked athletes.[1]

While Iran controls the Greco-Roman narrative, other nations are jockeying for position in the freestyle disciplines. The United States currently leads the men's freestyle hypothetical team rankings with 178 points, followed closely by Russia with 166 points. Meanwhile, individual standouts like Kyrgyzstan's Bekzat Almaz uulu have climbed to No. 3 in the 57kg freestyle rankings. As the wrestling world turns its attention to Astana, the Greco-Roman brackets will undoubtedly run through Tehran.[3][4][5]
