Four-Way Tie at the Summit: Net Run Rate Decides Historic ETPL Playoff Bracket
The inaugural European T20 Premier League regular season concluded with an unprecedented four-way tie for first place, leaving net run rate to separate Edinburgh, Amsterdam, Belfast, and Rotterdam ahead of the playoffs.

The inaugural European T20 Premier League (ETPL) regular season has concluded with a mathematical rarity: a four-way tie for first place. After 30 group-stage matches split between the Netherlands and Ireland, four of the six franchises finished the 2026 campaign with identical records of six wins, three losses, and one no-result, locking them all at 13 points.[1][2]
The logjam required net run rate to dictate the playoff seeding, turning the final weekend into a frantic calculator-watching exercise. The Edinburgh Castle Rockers emerged at the summit with a leading net run rate of +1.210, narrowly edging out the Amsterdam Flames at +1.040. The Belfast Wolves secured third place with a +0.600 mark, while the Rotterdam Dockers claimed the fourth and final playoff spot despite a negative net run rate of -0.024.[1][3]
The final standings mean Edinburgh and Amsterdam will face off in Qualifier 1 at The Village in Malahide, with the winner advancing directly to the championship match. Meanwhile, Belfast and Rotterdam are thrust into a sudden-death Eliminator clash. For the Dublin Guardians and Glasgow Cosmic, the season is over; both squads managed just two wins from their 10 fixtures to finish stranded on four points at the bottom of the table.[3][7]
Edinburgh’s surge to the top was anchored by dominant individual performances and wide-margin victories that padded their crucial run rate. Captain Mitchell Santner, who contributed 150 runs at an average of 50.00 alongside 10 wickets, praised his squad's cohesion. "It has been a great start to the first year of the tournament," Santner said.
"As a new team with a new group of players and management, we have really gelled well both on and off the field. We were very good in Holland and also performed well in Ireland, and while we lost a couple of games here, we were able to finish top of the table and go straight through."[7]
The dramatic conclusion validates the ETPL’s ambitious cross-border format. Launched to elevate the domestic game across three nations, the league mandated that each playing XI feature a minimum of five local talents alongside a maximum of four overseas stars. That blend produced tightly contested cricket from the opening week at Voorburg Cricket Club to the final stretch in Dublin.[2][5]
Amsterdam relied heavily on the firepower of their top order, with local hero Bas de Leede producing standout half-centuries to repeatedly bail the Flames out of trouble. Their second-place finish grants them the crucial double-chance in the playoffs—a massive advantage in a tournament where the margins between the top four have proven virtually non-existent.
Veteran batter Steve Smith highlighted the impact of the local contingent. "My door is always open to the boys; there're some really talented players in the squad," Smith said. "I've been particularly impressed with Bas de Leede – he's been sensational."
Belfast navigated rain-affected games and late setbacks before relying on the experience of international stars to secure their place in the final four. Captain Glenn Maxwell expressed confidence in his side's depth heading into the sudden-death Eliminator. "We're extremely happy with the balance that we have in our squad and the options that we've got to hopefully go deep into this tournament," Maxwell noted.[6]
For Rotterdam, sneaking into the top four underscores how chaotic the middle of the table became. Despite heavy defeats early on, the Dockers leaned on veteran leadership to grind out enough wins to match the leaders on points, ultimately surviving the cut over the eliminated Dublin and Glasgow sides. As the playoffs loom, the stakes are historic. The inaugural ETPL champion will not only claim the trophy but also set the benchmark for European franchise cricket, capping off a 10-match grind where the top contenders proved completely inseparable.[1]
