Apple Unveils Redesigned OLED iPad Mini With A20 Pro Chip Starting at $699

Apple has overhauled its smallest tablet with an 8.5-inch OLED screen, an A20 Pro processor, and a thinner water-resistant chassis. However, a $100 price increase and a 60Hz refresh rate limit its appeal for some buyers.

Apple has overhauled its smallest tablet for the first time since 2021, introducing an 8.5-inch OLED display and a $699 starting price. The update brings the 2026 iPad mini closer to the company's premium Pro line in aesthetics, though it retains several entry-level hardware compromises beneath the surface.[1][2]

The physical footprint remains largely identical to the previous generation, but the device is noticeably leaner. Apple shaved the thickness down to 5.4 millimeters, compared to the older model's 6.3 millimeters. The overall weight has also dropped from 297 grams to just 255 grams.[2][5]

For the first time, the iPad mini carries an official IP67 rating for water and dust resistance. This durability upgrade makes the tablet more viable for field workers and outdoor reading, addressing a long-standing request from users who treat the mini as a highly portable companion device.[3][5]

The most visible change is the screen itself. By reducing the surrounding bezels by 24 percent, Apple expanded the display from 8.3 inches to 8.5 inches. The new OLED panel delivers perfect black levels and a peak brightness of 1,200 nits, which is more than double the output of the previous LCD generation.[2][5]

Generational hardware improvements for the 2026 iPad mini.

Display Compromises and Binned Silicon

Despite the shift to OLED technology, the new iPad mini does not feature Apple's 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate. The display remains locked at 60Hz, a specification that has drawn immediate criticism from users expecting smoother scrolling on a device that now approaches premium pricing tiers.[2][4]

Apple is offering a glare-reducing nano-texture glass option for the first time on the mini. However, this matte finish is restricted to the 256GB and 512GB storage configurations, and it requires an additional $100 premium on top of the base hardware cost.[2][5]

Internal performance is driven by the new A20 Pro processor, built on a 2-nanometer manufacturing process. Apple claims the chip delivers up to 4.5 times faster artificial intelligence performance than the previous generation, positioning the tablet as a capable hub for local large language models.[5]

The silicon shipped in the base models is artificially limited. Buyers of the 128GB and 256GB configurations receive a binned version of the A20 Pro, featuring a five-core central processing unit and a standard 16-core Neural Engine.[2]

Only the top-tier 512GB model unlocks the processor's full potential. That $999 configuration includes an active sixth CPU core and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine, meaning the vast majority of iPad mini buyers will not experience the maximum performance Apple advertises in its marketing materials.[2]

The A20 Pro chip powers the tablet, though base models receive a binned version with fewer active cores.

Acoustic Engineering and Connectivity

Apple has also redesigned the tablet's audio architecture, marketing the new setup as an Acoustic Display. Instead of traditional speaker grilles, specially designed woofers are paired directly through the display panel to generate volume and bass.[2][5]

Custom tweeters are hidden between the glass and the aluminum enclosure to handle higher frequencies. This approach eliminates visible speaker holes along the chassis, contributing to the device's improved water resistance while reportedly delivering a wider soundstage for media consumption.[2][5]

Wireless connectivity receives a generational bump through Apple's proprietary N1 networking chip. The tablet now supports Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6, alongside Thread networking protocols for direct integration with modern smart home accessories.[5]

Cellular models utilize a new C2 modem module, which Apple claims increases data transfer speeds by up to 50 percent over the previous generation. The device relies entirely on eSIM technology, allowing users to provision cellular plans digitally without a physical SIM card slot.[5]

Camera Shifts and Market Positioning

Addressing a frequent complaint about the previous design, Apple relocated the 12-megapixel Center Stage front camera to the landscape edge. This orientation centers the user during video calls when the tablet is propped up horizontally in a folio case or stand.[5]

The hardware upgrades are heavily geared toward supporting iPadOS 27 and the next generation of Apple Intelligence. The A20 Pro's neural accelerators are designed to run an entirely new version of Siri AI, which processes complex dictation and contextual queries directly on the device.[5]

Despite the thinner profile and the brighter OLED panel, Apple maintains its standard all-day battery life claim. The tablet also supports faster charging protocols, though the company has not specified the exact wattage limit for the updated USB-C port.[5]

"With a remarkably thinner and lighter design, a stunning new OLED display, the incredibly powerful A20 Pro, and water and dust resistance, the new iPad mini is a huge leap forward," said Dave Pakula, Apple's vice president of Hardware Engineering, in the company's official release. Pakula emphasized that the device is targeted at creators, field service workers, and gamers who need portability.[5]

That leap forward comes with a substantial price hike. The base 128GB Wi-Fi model starts at $699, a $100 increase over the 2021 generation's entry price. Cellular models begin at $849, pushing the fully loaded 512GB version well past the $1,100 mark.[1][2]

The relocated 12-megapixel Center Stage camera sits on the landscape edge for better video call framing.

Alongside the tablet, Apple introduced a redesigned TechWoven Smart Folio priced at $79. The accessory matches the new device finishes, providing basic magnetic protection while doubling as a multi-angle viewing stand.[1][5]

The tablet is available in just two colors, Midnight and Starlight, dropping the pastel options offered in previous years. Pre-orders open on October 28, with retail availability and initial customer deliveries scheduled for November 6.[1][3]

The redesigned iPad mini establishes a new premium tier for small-format tablets, but its hardware segmentation requires buyers to navigate significant trade-offs. Consumers must weigh the benefits of an OLED panel and a thinner chassis against a 60Hz refresh rate and a steep entry price.[2][4]

Key points

  • Apple redesigned the iPad mini with an 8.5-inch OLED display, reducing bezels by 24 percent and doubling peak brightness to 1,200 nits.
  • The base $699 model features a binned A20 Pro processor, reserving the chip's full CPU and Neural Engine capabilities for the $999 512GB tier.
  • The chassis is now 5.4 millimeters thick, weighs 255 grams, and carries an IP67 rating for water and dust resistance.
  • The tablet introduces an Acoustic Display that eliminates speaker grilles, utilizing the screen itself to generate audio.

What we don’t know

  • How the binned 16-core Neural Engine in the base models will handle future, more demanding Apple Intelligence tasks compared to the Dual 16-core version.
  • The exact battery capacity in milliamp-hours, as Apple only advertises an all-day metric.
  • Whether the Acoustic Display technology compromises screen durability or repairability in the event of a drop.
