Ukraine's New 300km-Range Ballistic Missile Set for Combat Debut

Ukraine's latest domestically manufactured ballistic missile, the FP-7, is slated for its combat debut by the end of September, marking a significant node in Kyiv's evolving long-range strike architecture. Developed by the Ukrainian defense company Fire Point, the missile has completed approximately 15 test launches and is currently undergoing final certification by the Ministry of Defense.[1][3]
The FP-7 is designed to strike targets up to 300 kilometers (186 miles) away, carrying a warhead weighing up to 150 kilograms. Fire Point positions the weapon as a more affordable, indigenous alternative to the American-made ATACMS. By producing the system domestically, Ukraine bypasses the political and logistical constraints associated with Western-supplied long-range weapons, which often come with strict conditions regarding their use against targets inside Russian territory.[1]
The accelerated deployment of the FP-7 aligns with a broader systemic shift by Kyiv to proactively hunt down Russian launch sites. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy recently announced a new operation specifically targeting Russian ballistic missile launchers near the border. This approach serves as an alternative tactic to mitigate Ukraine's critical shortage of anti-ballistic interceptors, such as Patriot missiles, which have been rapidly depleted by ongoing Russian bombardments.[4]
“We have completed the on-the-ground testing and are preparing for tests over enemy territory,” Fire Point CEO and CTO Iryna Terekh stated during the DALO Industry Days exhibition in Denmark. Terekh emphasized that the company's systems are already conducting multiple daily missions over Russian territory, highlighting a level of operational discipline and consistency that few defense manufacturers can maintain under wartime conditions.[2]
The urgency behind the FP-7's development is driven by the persistent threat of Russia's Iskander tactical ballistic missile systems. With a range of around 500 kilometers, the Iskander has been the primary workhorse for Moscow's combined mass attacks against Ukrainian targets. Because these missiles are launched from mobile erector-launcher systems inside Russian border regions like Bryansk and Kursk, intercepting them in flight has proven increasingly difficult and costly for Ukraine's strained air defenses.[4]

Fielding a domestic ballistic missile allows Ukraine to double down on its “long-range sanctions” campaign. This strategy involves systematic strikes on Russian oil refineries, logistics hubs, and military airfields to degrade Moscow's war machine at its source. A ballistic missile like the FP-7, which approaches its target at high terminal velocities, is significantly harder for Russian air defenses to intercept than the slower-moving long-range drones Ukraine has relied upon thus far.[1][5]
Beyond the FP-7, Fire Point is advancing parallel programs that could further alter the strategic landscape. The company is developing the FP-9, a larger ballistic missile with an estimated range of 800 to 850 kilometers—placing Moscow well within its reach. Traveling at speeds up to 2,200 meters per second and capable of carrying an 800-kilogram warhead, the FP-9 is expected to begin trials by late autumn, potentially introducing a new level of deterrence.[1][3]
Simultaneously, Fire Point is addressing the defensive side of the ballistic equation. The company is collaborating with over a dozen European defense contractors on the Freyja project, an initiative to build a pan-European anti-ballistic missile interceptor system by mid-2027. The FP-7 architecture is serving as the foundation for the interceptor variant, known as the FP-7.x, which recently completed its first fully guided flight.[3][6]
The introduction of the FP-7 provides Ukraine with a critical tool to enforce its strategic objectives and protect its airspace by neutralizing threats before they launch. By establishing a credible domestic ballistic capability, Kyiv aims to disrupt Russia's logistical networks and potentially force a recalibration of Moscow's operational calculus as the conflict extends into its fifth year.[1][4]
