For years, the U.S. Navy has faced a growing mathematical problem in the Western Pacific: Chinese long-range air-to-air and anti-ship missiles have increasingly outranged the weapons carried by American carrier strike groups, threatening to push U.S. carriers further from the fight. The Pentagon's existing medium-range interceptors, while highly advanced and combat-proven, lacked the sheer reach to threaten enemy bombers before they could launch their payloads. This week, the Navy revealed its definitive answer to that standoff distance, unveiling a highly classified, next-generation weapon designed to fundamentally rewrite the engagement envelope and restore American air dominance.[1][3]

The AIM-424 Long Range Air-to-Air Missile (LRAAM), officially dubbed 'Malice,' was publicly disclosed at the Tailhook Symposium in Reno, Nevada, following years of quiet development by Raytheon's Advanced Technology division. Capable of striking targets at distances exceeding 250 nautical miles—or roughly 288 statute miles—the Malice outranges all currently known Chinese air-to-air missiles, providing a massive buffer for American pilots. The Department of the Navy confirmed the weapon is currently in active flight testing, releasing imagery of the missile loaded onto an F/A-18E Super Hornet and secured within the internal weapons bay of an F-35C Lightning II.[1][3][4]

The ability to fit inside the F-35's internal bay is the system's most critical design feature. While the Navy recently fielded the AIM-174B 'Gunslinger'—an air-launched variant of the SM-6 surface-to-air missile with a range of at least 150 nautical miles—that weapon is 16.5 feet long and features a massive 42.7-inch wingspan. Because of its sheer size, the Gunslinger can only be carried externally by fourth-generation F/A-18 Super Hornets, sacrificing the aircraft's radar cross-section. The Malice solves this trade-off, packing a two-stage solid-propellant rocket motor into a 13.5-foot frame with a much smaller 26.2-inch wingspan, allowing stealth fighters to carry extreme-range munitions without compromising their low observability.[2][4][7]

The service emphasized that the weapon is designed to maintain a 'first look, first shot, first kill' advantage for Marine and Naval aviators, ensuring they can defeat advanced threats before entering the lethal radius of enemy interceptors. Raytheon President Phil Jasper echoed this strategic assessment, stating that the AIM-424 delivers a 'generational leap' in combat capability that can outrange any current threat in the theater.[1][3][6]

The engineering behind the AIM-424 reflects a fundamental shift in how the military approaches long-range intercepts. To achieve its extreme range, the missile likely employs a specialized flight profile, climbing to high altitudes where the air is less dense before gliding and diving onto its target at hypersonic speeds. Its aerodynamic profile, which includes specialized fins and strakes, allows the 1,500-pound weapon to retain significant maneuverability in its terminal phase. Upon reaching its target, the Malice utilizes a blast-fragmentation warhead, destroying airborne threats through a combination of explosive overpressure and high-velocity shrapnel.[2][3][5]

Defense analysts note that the Malice is not primarily intended for close-quarters dogfighting against highly agile fighter jets in a traditional turning engagement. Instead, its primary targets are the critical, heavy nodes of an adversary's air network: heavy bombers carrying anti-ship cruise missiles, airborne early-warning and control (AEW&C) aircraft, and aerial refueling tankers. By pushing these high-value, vulnerable assets hundreds of miles away from a carrier strike group, the AIM-424 effectively creates a massive defensive bubble, neutralizing the complex 'kill chain' required to target American surface vessels before a shot is even fired.[5][7]

While designed for internal carriage on stealth fighters, the Malice can also be carried externally by fourth-generation aircraft like the F/A-18 Super Hornet.

The development of the Malice appears to trace its lineage back to the Long-Range Engagement Weapon (LREW) concept first explored by the Pentagon in 2017, which sought a two-stage interceptor capable of internal carriage. While the Navy has not disclosed the exact timeline for the weapon's operational deployment, the release of captive-carry test photos from Air Test and Evaluation Squadron 23 (VX-23) indicates the program has advanced significantly beyond the conceptual phase. The missile is slated for integration across the current fleet, including the F/A-18E/F Block III and F-35C TR-3, as well as the future F/A-XX next-generation fighter.[4][6]

The unveiling of the AIM-424 also highlights a broader, multi-pronged effort by the U.S. military to rapidly expand its air-to-air magazine depth and engagement distances. While the Navy pushes forward with the integration of the Malice and the externally carried AIM-174B, the Air Force is closely monitoring the program while continuing its own parallel development of the AIM-260 Joint Advanced Tactical Missile (JATM).
