The rigorous testing process significantly increases manufacturing costs, which is why many luxury brands opt for the standard ISO 22810 rating even on their sports models.[3]
The 125% overpressure test is the core of the standard. For a 200-meter rating, the watch is placed in a water chamber and pressurized to 25 bar (equivalent to 250 meters) for two hours. This sustained pressure tests the integrity of the crystal, the case back gasket, and the crown seals.[1][4]
Following the two-hour soak, the pressure is rapidly reduced to 0.3 bar within one minute, and the watch remains there for another hour. This simulates the rapid pressure changes of ascending to the surface, ensuring the crystal does not pop off due to trapped internal pressure.[1]

Beyond pressure, ISO 6425 mandates a strict condensation test. The watch is heated to 40 degrees Celsius (104 degrees Fahrenheit) on a hot plate. A drop of water at 18 to 25 degrees Celsius is then placed on the crystal.[1][6]

The standard requires the watch to maintain accuracy within 30 seconds per day after being exposed to a direct current magnetic field of 4,800 A/m (amperes per meter). The bezel itself must be protected against accidental rotation. If a diver bumps the watch against a tank, the bezel can only rotate counter-clockwise, which would indicate less bottom time remaining rather than more—a fail-safe design that prevents decompression sickness.[1][6]
