Why this matters
The acquisition highlights how major mobile publishers are buying out their most successful investments to secure guaranteed revenue streams, even as the integration process triggers significant layoffs in the European development sector.
Supercell will formally absorb the remaining shares of Metacore by the end of September 2026, finalizing a multi-year consolidation that brings the puzzle hit Merge Mansion directly into the publisher's live-service portfolio. The Finnish mobile giant, which has bankrolled Metacore since 2018 through a series of equity investments and a massive €150 million credit line, signed the final acquisition agreement this week.[4][5][7]
The transaction converts a long-standing financial dependency into outright ownership. While financial terms of the final buyout remain undisclosed, the integration process is already reshaping Metacore's footprint. In preparation for the handover, the studio recently shuttered its satellite offices in Germany and Sweden and eliminated 159 positions at its Helsinki headquarters.[2][4]
For Supercell, the acquisition secures direct control over a proven revenue engine in a volatile mobile market. Since its launch in 2020, Merge Mansion has accumulated more than 60 million downloads and generated an estimated $540 million in lifetime revenue. The title continues to demonstrate strong retention, pulling in roughly $7.7 million over the last 30 days alone.[2][6]
The move to bring the game in-house aligns with Supercell's broader strategy of doubling down on established, high-yield properties. In 2025, Supercell reported a 4 percent decrease in full-year revenue to €2.65 billion, though pre-tax profits climbed 6 percent to €932 million. By acquiring the remainder of Metacore, Supercell captures the full margin on a game it previously only backed as an investor.[4]
The move to bring the game in-house aligns with Supercell's broader strategy of doubling down on established, high-yield properties.
"Merge Mansion created a completely new genre and has all the ingredients of a game that can be played for years and remembered forever," Supercell president Sara Bach said following the signing. Bach highlighted the game's passionate player community and narrative loop as the primary drivers for bringing the development team directly into the Supercell ecosystem.[2][4]
Metacore CEO Mika Tammenkoski framed the acquisition as a necessary evolution for the game's infrastructure. "Supercell's expertise in operating and growing global live games over many years gives Merge Mansion the best possible foundation for long-term success," Tammenkoski said, noting that the existing development team will remain intact to manage the community they built over the past six years.[4][6]
The acquisition marks the end of Metacore's run as an independent entity, a status it maintained even as it relied heavily on Supercell's capital. In 2021, Supercell provided a $180 million credit line to fuel Merge Mansion's aggressive user acquisition campaigns, a financial structure designed to let Metacore scale without diluting its equity at the time. Now, that financial bridge has culminated in a full buyout.[1][3]
Player-facing services for Merge Mansion will continue without interruption as the corporate integration proceeds through the end of the month. The immediate test for Supercell will be whether its centralized live-operations infrastructure can accelerate the puzzle game's growth, or if the structural cuts in Helsinki will slow the cadence of the narrative updates that keep its 60 million players logging in.[5][6]
