Resemblance, Evidence, and Convention: Charles Peirce's Three Modes of Meaning

American philosopher Charles Sanders Peirce divided all human meaning-making into three distinct categories: icons, indexes, and symbols. Understanding how these signs function reveals why some designs cross cultural boundaries instantly while others require years of learned convention.

Boston, May 14, 1867. Charles Sanders Peirce, a 28-year-old chemist and logician, stands before the American Academy of Arts and Sciences to present a paper titled 'On a New List of Categories.' He is trying to solve a problem that has bothered philosophers since Aristotle: how exactly does a mark on a page, a sound in the air, or a shape in the mind actually mean anything to the person observing it? The young scientist is laying the groundwork for a system that will eventually govern everything from global airport signage to the smartphone in your pocket.[1]

Peirce's answer, refined over the next 47 years until his death in 1914, would become the foundation of modern semiotics. He concluded that human beings process reality through exactly three types of signs: the icon, the index, and the symbol. Unlike European linguists who focused strictly on spoken and written words, Peirce built a universal architecture of meaning. He wanted a framework that could explain how a footprint, a painting, and a mathematical equation all transmit information to the human brain.[1][7]

The distinction between the three relies entirely on the relationship between the signifier—the physical mark or sound—and the signified concept it represents. An icon means something by looking like it. An index means something by being physically caused by it. A symbol means something only because a specific group of people have agreed that it does. Understanding this triad explains why certain designs cross cultural boundaries instantly, while others require years of learned convention to decode. It is the invisible grammar of visual communication.[2][3]

Consider the icon. In Peirce’s framework, an icon shares physical or structural qualities with its object. A map of Paris is an icon of Paris; a portrait of a king is an icon of the king; a scale model of a building is an icon of the building. The relationship is one of pure resemblance. The observer does not need to speak a specific language to understand the connection, provided they have seen the original object or something similar to it in their own life.[1][6]

The three modes of meaning differ entirely based on their relationship to the object they represent.

'The icon has no dynamical connection with the object it represents,' Peirce wrote, noting that its qualities simply resemble those of the object and excite analogous sensations in the mind. This makes icons incredibly efficient for crossing language barriers. A drawing of a printer on a computer screen requires no English vocabulary to decode, provided the user knows what a physical printer looks like. It is the most direct form of visual translation available to a designer. This is why international transit hubs rely so heavily on iconic signage for restrooms, dining, and ground transportation.[8]

The index, however, requires evidence. An indexical sign is physically connected to the thing it represents, often through a direct cause-and-effect relationship. Smoke is an index of fire. A footprint in the mud is an index of a passing animal. A weather vane pointing north is an index of the wind's direction. The index does not necessarily resemble its object—smoke looks nothing like a flame—but it proves that the object exists or was recently present. Medical symptoms operate entirely on indexical logic; a fever is an index of an underlying infection, communicating a reality that the patient cannot articulate.[2][4]

Photography presents a fascinating semiotic case study within this framework. While a photograph looks exactly like its subject—making it highly iconic—it is fundamentally an index. A traditional photograph is created by light physically bouncing off the subject and striking a chemical emulsion or a digital sensor. The resulting image is a direct physical trace of reality, capturing a specific moment in time. This indexical quality is what gives photographs their evidentiary weight in a courtroom, a status a hyper-realistic painting can never achieve, because the painting is merely an icon, born from the artist's mind rather than a physical collision with light.[6]

Finally, there is the symbol. Symbols have no physical resemblance or causal connection to their objects whatsoever. Their meaning is entirely arbitrary, sustained exclusively by habit, rule, or cultural convention. The English word 'dog' does not look like a dog, nor is it physically caused by a dog. It only means a four-legged canine because English speakers have collectively agreed upon that association over centuries of linguistic evolution. If that collective agreement vanishes, the symbol reverts to being nothing more than meaningless ink on a page.[1][3]

Because they are untethered from physical reality, symbols are infinitely flexible. They allow humans to communicate highly abstract concepts—justice, tomorrow, mathematics, or freedom—that cannot be drawn as an icon or tracked as an index. However, this power comes with a steep cognitive cost. A person must memorize thousands of arbitrary shapes, such as the letters of an alphabet or the syntax of a programming language, before those symbols yield any meaning. The global standardization of traffic symbols, like the red octagon for 'stop,' demonstrates how arbitrary shapes can achieve near-universal compliance, but only through relentless, standardized repetition.[5][7]

Symbols require the highest cognitive investment to learn, but offer the greatest flexibility for abstract concepts.

In modern digital design, these three categories frequently collapse into one another, creating unexpected friction. The 'save' icon on most software interfaces is a classic example: a rendering of a 3.5-inch floppy disk. In 1995, this was a true icon. It looked exactly like the physical object users inserted into their computers to store their data. The resemblance was direct, physical, and immediately recognizable to anyone working in an office. It bridged the gap between the physical desk and the digital desktop.[3]

Today, however, a 20-year-old software developer has likely never held a physical floppy disk. For that generation of users, the square with a sliding metal shutter no longer resembles a physical referent in their lived environment. It has transitioned entirely into a symbol—an arbitrary shape that simply means 'save data' through cultural habit. The icon has died, and a symbol has taken its place, wearing the icon's corpse. This semiotic drift happens constantly in technology, from the telephone receiver icon used for cellular calls to the physical clipboard used for digital copying.[3][7]

This drift highlights a core tension in user interface design. Designers often strive for universal icons, hoping to bypass the cognitive load of learning new symbols and making their software instantly accessible to a global market. Yet, as technology abstracts away physical tools—replacing gears, files, and mailboxes with invisible cloud architecture—true icons become increasingly difficult to maintain. You cannot draw a picture of a process that has no physical shape. The result is a digital landscape heavily reliant on learned symbols masquerading as intuitive icons.[8]

As physical referents disappear, many digital icons transition functionally into arbitrary symbols.

Peirce himself anticipated this fluidity, warning his readers that signs rarely exist in a pure, isolated state. A traffic sign featuring the silhouette of a deer is iconic because it looks like a deer. It is indexical because it points to the physical presence of actual deer in this specific geographic area. And it is symbolic because its yellow diamond shape is a conventional warning format agreed upon by highway authorities. The meaning is a composite of all three modes working simultaneously, each reinforcing the other to ensure the driver hits the brakes.[1][5]

The enduring power of Peirce’s triad lies in its diagnostic utility. When a public health campaign fails to communicate a risk, or a software interface confuses its users, the failure can almost always be traced to a mismatch in sign categories. Relying on a symbol when an audience lacks the cultural convention, or using an icon that no longer resembles the user's reality, guarantees a breakdown in meaning. By breaking communication down to its atomic parts, Peirce provided a timeless toolkit for ensuring that what we signal is actually what is seen.[3][8]

Fits well when: Establishing proof, direction, or physical presence (e.g., wayfinding arrows, notification badges). Does not fit when: The object is hypothetical, future-oriented, or entirely digital.

The Symbol (Convention)

Signs that communicate entirely through arbitrary cultural agreement and habit.

For: Symbols are infinitely flexible. They can represent the most abstract, complex, and theoretical concepts humanity can imagine, from quantum mechanics to constitutional law. Against: They require a massive initial cognitive investment to learn. A reader must memorize thousands of arbitrary shapes (letters and words) before a book yields any meaning. Evidence: The global standardization of traffic symbols (like the red octagon for 'stop') demonstrates how arbitrary shapes can achieve near-universal compliance through sheer repetition. Fits well when: The audience shares a common cultural or linguistic framework, and the concepts are complex or abstract.
