Poland Defends VNL Crown in Five-Set Thriller Over the United States

The undisputed kings of international volleyball are not ready to abdicate. In a heavyweight clash that pushed both rosters to their absolute physical limits, World No. 1 Poland defended their Volleyball Nations League (VNL) crown on Sunday, outlasting the United States in a spectacular 3-2 thriller (25-21, 23-25, 25-27, 25-23, 15-10) in Ningbo, China.[1][2]

The stakes inside the Ningbo Beilun Sports and Arts Center were massive. Poland was hunting for a back-to-back title and their third overall VNL gold, while the Americans were desperate to snap a streak of three previous VNL final losses. For nearly two and a half hours, almost 6,000 fans witnessed a masterclass in modern volleyball—a brutal, high-altitude exchange of heavy serves, monster blocks, and relentless offensive volume.[1][3][6]

Poland drew first blood, utilizing their suffocating net defense to take the opening set 25-21. But the United States, running a hyper-efficient offense through opposite Jake Hanes, refused to fold. Hanes was virtually untouchable in the middle frames, attacking at an immaculate 100% success rate during a pivotal third set. When USA middle blocker Taylor Averill delivered a clutch kill to steal the third set 27-25 in overtime, the Americans were suddenly one set away from gold.[1][3]

In the 'money time,' Poland's championship pedigree surfaced. Tied at 5-5, Polish setter Marcin Komenda stepped to the service line and engineered a devastating five-point run, blowing the set wide open at 10-5. The Americans simply couldn't pass well enough to run their offense, and Poland's block swallowed the resulting high balls. The engine behind Poland's comeback was outside hitter Tomasz Fornal, who was rightfully crowned the tournament's Most Valuable Player. Fornal was a nightmare at the service line, dropping five crucial aces and finishing with 15 points. When the USA threatened to run away with the match in the fourth set, it was Fornal's service pressure that consistently broke the American serve-receive and allowed Poland's block to set up shop.[1][5]

Earlier in the day, Slovenia defeated Japan 3-1 to claim a historic bronze, their first-ever VNL medal.
