Poland and Belgium Upend Expectations as Women's EuroVolley 2026 Knockout Bracket is Set

The 60-match gauntlet is over, and the CEV EuroVolley 2026 Women has officially shifted from a marathon into a sprint. Across four host nations—Türkiye, Czechia, Azerbaijan, and Sweden—24 teams have been whittled down to a final 16. Before the first serve, the power dynamics seemed set in stone, but eight days of relentless action delivered both absolute dominance and massive disruption. The heavyweights left no doubt. Italy, the reigning world champion, and Serbia, a squad built on deep championship pedigree, looked virtually untouchable. Both powerhouses cruised to perfect 5-0 match records, dropping only a single set each to finish with identical, suffocating 15-1 set ratios.[1][3]

Serbia's offensive depth, anchored by superstar Tijana Bošković and rising outside hitter Aleksandra Uzelac, overwhelmed their Pool B opponents in Brno. Meanwhile, Italy controlled Gothenburg's Pool D with clinical precision, cementing their status as the ultimate tournament benchmark.[1][2]

But the real story of the preliminary round was written by the bracket disruptors in Pools A and C. In Istanbul, Poland pulled off the upset of the tournament, dethroning defending European champion and host nation Türkiye in a thrilling 3-2 tie-break on the final day of pool play. The victory handed Poland the top spot in Pool A, but ironically placed them on a collision course with Italy in the knockout bracket.[1][2]

That single result fundamentally altered the path to the gold medal. By falling to second place, Türkiye shifted to the opposite half of the draw. If both Türkiye and Italy survive the gauntlet, the two pre-tournament favorites can now only meet in the championship match on September 6.[2][5]

Over in Baku, Belgium completely dismantled the expected hierarchy of Pool C. Entering the tournament ranked below the Netherlands, the Belgians orchestrated a flawless 5-0 campaign. They capped their run with a dramatic 3-2 victory over the Dutch squad in a winner-takes-all clash for first place, transforming themselves from a dangerous second-tier team into an unbeaten pool winner.[1]

Sweden advanced out of Pool D in Gothenburg, while Slovenia made waves by sweeping Germany to comfortably punch their ticket to the elimination stage. France also emerged from Pool D looking significantly sharper than their recent Volleyball Nations League campaign suggested.[1]

Not everyone survived the grind. Ukraine, who entered the tournament ranked No. 18 in the world, suffered a bitterly disappointing campaign. They finished fifth in Pool B with a 1-4 record, becoming the highest-ranked casualty of the group stage.[1]

Now, the safety net is gone. Eight Round of 16 ties will immediately cut the field in half, with four matches hosted in Brno and four in Istanbul. From this point forward, there are no standings points to recover and no next match to repair a bad evening. It is pure knockout volleyball.[2][4]

The CEV EuroVolley 2026 Women champion will earn a direct qualification quota for the LA28 Olympic Games, while the top three finishing teams will automatically secure their places in the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Women's World Cup.
